If you're in Week mode, just hover the mouse over the bottom edge of the end of the event until you get the 'adjust' cursor, and then drag either up/down or sideways.

Maybe they felt Month mode wasn't fine-grained enough to do it justice - when you do it in Week mode, it changes in quarter-hour increments (unless you're going day-to-day) which is pretty sensible. I suppose they figured that if you want to change a 3 day event to a 7 day event, it's quicker just to double-click on it and type in the new end date .
