I'll be following it and I'm very interested to see if the unibody MacBook gets an upgrade, as I'm waiting for one to be shipped, which I ordered last week. With my luck, they'll bump it up a bit.
my wife is due a new laptop at work. i told her to wait. she likes the size of the Macbook, but wanted a Pro . . . today the 13" Pro was released. too cool.
EDIT: oh, she just informed me she likes the 15". well, it was updated too.

OK, I'm phoning the store I ordered the MB from, first thing tomorrow morning and change my order to the 13" MBP, if it hasn't shipped yet. Heck, I'll do it anyways.

I am wondering how they will be doing the update. If you don't have Leopard already, it will still be $129 …are we going to finally get to use one of those coupons they send out? I really don't think they will be doing an "Upgrade Disc" and a "Retail Disc" scenario.
You may be right about it being a downloadable update!
i have the current 8GB 3G iPhone as well. i am going to try out OS 3.0 first . . . but i could easily drop $99 to get the 8GB 3GS version instead. i have barely filled up 1/2 of my 8GB iPhone so far and i have no reason to go for a larger HD in one. hmmmm. hmmm.

Hmmmm ... not a great start =P
I can understand the clunkyness of the ordering pages right now because they must be getting slammed, but this is the pricing page I get:
I'm an existing customer and have upgraded every time so far ... I *really* hope these aren't the prices they're offering to upgrade -- $299 for the 8GB??!!
Yikes!
=/
[update]
The small print:
"2) Requires new two-year AT&T wireless service contract, sold separately to qualified customers; credit check required; must be 18 or older. For non-qualified customers, including existing AT&T customers who want to upgrade from another phone or replace an iPhone 3G, the price with a new two-year agreement is $499 (8GB), $599 (16GB), or $699 (32GB)."
AT&T shoots itself in the foot. Frakking your existing customers in the butt = lost sale and lost new 2-year contract. Good job, dicks.

Yes, it is new at least as far as existing customers are concerned -- last time around we got the upgrade pricing, not the "pay full price and you still need to commit to a new contract" plan ...
Hopefully, they'll change their minds (which they did last time, as I recall ...)
Anyways, tried to talk to a live person at the Apple Store, but the welcome-bot kept saying "I'll connect you to the next representative" and then hung up. I hate those automated systems.

Back from the Apple Store ...
Apparently, if you're an existing customer and upgraded last year to the 3G, you "used up" your incentive pricing ... so the sweet deal really is: Full boat on the hardware and a new two-year commitment ...
No thanks =P
I guess instead of re-upping folks for another two years + the $200-$300 cash, they rather have ... nothing + a contract that runs out in another 7 months.

Yeah, they do suck on their pricing. Get the OS 3.0 for now (it's free for the existing iPhones) and then check upgrade pricing in 7 months. They might have a better deal by then.

Well, the explanations I've been reading are, essentially:
If you bought the first iPhone, you paid full price for the hardware + a two-year contract, so AT&T wasn't "losing" anything when they offered the 3G at a subsidized price + two years (which was actually *more* expensive for the customer than the original deal) ...
This time around, since apparently they didn't make enough off your original purchase + 1 year of contract + raising rates for the second term + what you *did* pay for the new hardware + 1+ year of contract, they prefer to have you run out your existing contract ...
Otherwise, they want you to pay $200 to cover the remaining subsidy for the 3G, then essentially subsidizing the new phone + a new two-year contract ...
What they don't appear to offer is full-price for the new phone w/o the requirement for a new contract. That way their subsidy would still be paid-off under the existing contract and they'd (presumably) make some cash off the new equipment sale. They'd certainly not be any worse-off than letting existing contracts simply expire, and they'd gain good-will, at least, of existing customers instead of pissing them off ...
This is why I hate tying phones to plans. I would much rather pay full-price for the equipment and be able to buy service a la carte ... but then the service providers would actually have to focus on service and not hardware deals ...
I have a 2 yr old MB and am considering the MBP $1099 education. I calculate I can upgrade for about $230 !! (assuming I can get $800 for my old book - with all the software on it and 1 year left on AppleCare).
That includes taking the free iPod and Printer and reselling them. That gives me a faster Laptop and a new 3 yr AppleCare.coverage... I'll also save $30 on upgrading Snow Leopard and $30 extending my Mobile Me account 12 months.
IF it all works out .. final cost should be around $170 + Tax.
I'm just guessing, but I highly suspect that Snow Leopard will ship as an upgrade disc and a separate full install disc. I don't see any other way to distinguish if you're upgrading or using a full install AFTER you've already purchased the install DVD.
The sucky thing about that is, if you ever need to do a clean install, you would have to install Leopard first, then update to Snow Leopard - just like those stupid "drop-in discs" the Apple Stores were doing a while back for people who purchased a new Mac the day of and a few days after Leopard was released.
Even a downloadable update would be the same setup (check for previous install). I just don't see any other way of doing it. Got any ideas?

The Snow Leopard Install disk might just ask for you to put in a Leopard disk to verify. I can't imagine they would make you install Leopard and then turn around and reinstall SL on top of it.

Why would it do that? NeoOffice patches check for a supported version of Neo before it will install the patch. All it has to do is check for your current installed system version (or look at your receipts).

Dang! I just called the store I ordered my MacBook from and found out it had been shipped yesterday...and since I ordered for my small business, it is pretty much a done deal by law now as it is paid for and shipped.
Oh well, basically it would be just an SD card reader (no biggie) and a FW800 (somewhat of a biggie) upgrade on that setup. And yeah, the option to go to 8 gigs of max ram instead of four.
Wasn't the last time Apple released an "upgrade" it in fact was the full version?
Quote:
Apple released 10.1 as a free upgrade CD for 10.0 users, in addition to the US$129 boxed version for people running only Mac OS 9. It was discovered that the upgrade CDs were actually full install CDs that could be used with Mac OS 9 systems by removing a specific file; Apple later re-released the CDs in an actual stripped-down format that did not facilitate installation on such systems

Nah, I guess I'm quite cool with this setup now for a while. Quite happy with this thing too. I can live w/o the FW800 as I don't have any FW peripherals. I'm also bound by slightly different terms and legslation now since I ordered this via my small business (to get the tax write-offs and such), so I am not a private person customer, but a business customer.
I purchased as a business customer a tower which upgraded ten days later. I called and locked in on a return before the 14 calendar day refund ran out. Opened incurs a 10% restocking fee. Mine was opened but they waived the restock fee since they could not deliver for a few weeks.
