When I send someone a large email message, in the Activity Viewer I notice that Mail sends the message (watch the % count), and then when it's finished, it... sends it all over again, copying it into the Sent folder in the cloud. This is just stupid. Since the Sent version is always going to match the sent version, why don't they just write it straight to the server-side Sent folder and then send it to the recipient from there? Twice the bandwidth necessary.

The way it is they are using your bandwidth to "send" it twice. Using your suggestion they would need to use theirs to send it out, a lot more email bandwidth they would need on their end. Also they make sure it can actually be sent, no address errors etc.
It's also a matter of smtp servers, Mail is set to use your smtp server, not Apple's. There is a method to the madness.
Sending an 8Mb image, waiting for it to be sent, and then waiting for it to be sent AGAIN, while it ties up the internet because all that upload bandwidth usage stops my browser from handshaking - it means I'm stuck having to do something in real life. Whom do I sue?
