The sound of his voice was enough to make a billygoat puke. I actually stopped watching games for which he did commentary, he annoyed me that much.
Now that he's retired, I will no longer be subjected to insightful commentary such as "you see that mud on his jersey? That means he's a football player." Or, "In order to win this game, they're going to have to score points, AND stop the other team from scoring points." Thanks John, I never would have figured that out without you... jack@ss! No longer will I be subjected to Mr. Madden's obsession with drawing a virtual penis on the TV screen to show me where the guy just ran with the ball - after I just watched it!!
They can replace him with a trained baboon for all I care, it'll still be better...

John Madden came from an era when sports were on the radio and sports announcers had to talk a WHOLE lot more than they did once sports became televised. He was just trying to do a good job in the way he was trained to do. Can't fault him for that.

John Madden was probably my favorite football coach ever. I wish my football coaches had been more like him. Al Davis and his players loved him. And they won! A players coach and an owners coach. Retired from coaching on top. Not too many can do all that.
I loved him as an announcer because he brought fun to the game and he knew what he was talking about without boring us to tears with numbers and crap. He has heart and soul. He has personality. I can see why some may not like his personality, some like their football straight up. Different strokes...
I don't even watch that much football any more, but I'll miss John Madden.

I completely agree - Madden was smash mouth football non of that pansy girly shiit
His story is quite amazing. He got a career ending injury before he even got a chance to play a professional game with the Philadelphia Eagles. He got a job as linebacker coach for the Oakland Raiders at the age of 30. Why did Al Davis pick him when Madden was never even a head coach of a Division 1A football team? Two years after that at the age of 32 he become the Raider's head coach. Again I repeat, never a Division 1A college football head coach yet he becomes head coach of a professional football team. Everything fell Madden's way but he is an interesting character.
