And for the curious, if you've ever wondered why tiny two-bedroom apartments in Manhattan sell for an average of $1.3 million, and how anyone can afford it... The Street is what's fueled the real estate insanity for years. Most of the bankers at the staff level make an average $80K in salary. But then they get these seven-figure bonuses with which they engage in bidding wars on co-ops and condos, driving prices through the roof, and pay cash for the damned things! Nice work if you can get it, eh?
The state comptroller, Thomas P. DiNapoli, said it was unclear if banks had used taxpayer money for the bonuses, a possibility that strikes corporate governance experts, and indeed many ordinary Americans, as outrageous. He urged the Obama administration to examine the issue closely.
The word in that sentence I have a problem with is "many". Could someone please find the one "ordinary" American who thinks this is not outrageous? By what parameter would you call this person ordinary? They would either have brain damage or listen to too much Rush Limbaugh. Neither of those disabilities would make the person ordinary.
Just nit picking. If the writer is going to include commentary he should at least make it believable.
There's that, and if you really want to nitpick: If "ordinary Americans" means anyone not receiving these inflated handouts, does that imply that those who do are somehow extraordinary?" I submit that only their luck is "extraordinary." As for us "ordinary" folk, the past eight years would be an example of extraordinarily bad luck — on a national level.
Well the way the current stuimulus package is going it looks like the Dems will own it lock, stock, and barrel. So I hope Obama authorizes the US AG office to monitor and prosecute those that take $ and misuse or abuse it, and that includes CEO bonuses. Personally I wouldn't give cash to any company unless they cleaned out top management first- the CEO, CFO, and all the VPs. Why reward failure (and greed)?
Then I'd tell the new guys, IF you do x, y, or z with the $ we're coming after YOU (personally)! It'll make the IRS look like Glenda the Good Witch of the North ! And I'd hold their feet to the fire...
The big problem is the Bush Administration held NO ONE accountable.. that's why we lost $9 Billion in Iraq *poof*, we have 10,000s FEMA trailers that aren't habitable, and the Bankers and CEOs went nuts with bonus $, knowing the bailout would cover their loses... and how much of that have they loaned or put into circulation? If it were me, I'd go after these b*ssterds and try them for treason ! One way ticket to Gitmo !! Reopen the place !!
