I'm at a crossroads,

my Verizon contract is up and I've been eying that new iPhone for some time now. Except I start reading from some folks who don't seem especially thrilled with AT&T lately, so I'm wondering should I wait, take the plunge and switch, or resign with Verizon.

Verizon's service has been very good I must say, I'm not too thrilled with the new Storm 3G phone from Verizon and my older Motorola Razr is sufficient but lacking in several areas.

So for those who have AT&T right now and/or own an iPhone, are you happy? Any problems, regrets, joys?
I know the price to buy in to AT&T including getting my wife's phone setup along with car chargers and bluetooth sets is close to $400, although I would be getting my company monthly discount of 22% added.

I'll admit, at first it was rough (Sept for me), but it has gotten much better. I had Verizon before, and ATT is just as good (now). Regional thing? (I'm in SoCal). If you're just looking at it from a phone perspective, the iPhone loses some appeal. But if you like any of the other stuff, it's a very exciting product. The applications people are developing (fun and work) are truly amazing.

I am not much of a cell phone person so I hesitated in grabbing a 3G iPhone. I mainly used to use a Zaurus PDA for email and web surfing. The iPhone has become my laptop for the most part. It is nice to be able to have access to the web just about everywhere. Over the summer, the GPS was very handy when I would go on day-long motorcycle rides.

I have had ATT for about 7 years now and had good luck. In the rural areas I wonder through, it seems Sprint and T-Mobile were the worst and Verizon and ATT were the best.

I can't add much since I don't have At&T - However I will agree , Jaz has the Storm 3G and we both are not to impress with it

Reception wise, I feel they (AT&T and Verizon)are both up there, and the 3G features now prevalent in the newer phone are very attractive and useful.

I'm leaning more towards doing it, especially now that I find myself recently on the go and emailing and arranging more meetings with colleagues. That GPS feature has come in handy more than once lately, thankfully some friends were riding along with GPS and saved me from getting lost or late to a gathering.

That was my impression, sticky onscreen keys were very annoying.

I have AT&T, I have had Verizon too. The only plus to Verizon is I feel they may have better in-building penetration of their signal. For example if you're in the basement, especially in a larger building. Other than that I like AT&T. One thing I like is AT&T's rollover minutes for one. Plus Verizon hobbles their phone software so you have to jump through hoops to use your own ringtones.

Also getting high res pictures off of the phone, I don't know if it's still like this but Verizon at one time wouldn't allow you to send the high res photos out, too much bandwidth.

Plus the iPhone is much cooler than any Verizon phone.

The in-building penetration in our own home was a concern for me a few years back when we originally HAD AT&T. But happily our friend who has AT&T has used his phone on our house several times with no problems. Can't say the same for friends and relatives with Sprint or T-Mobile.

I haven't had Verizon, but I have had AT&T and Sprint. Sprint was terrible outside the beaten path.

AT&T has been pretty good for the past 5+ years I have had them. If I could ever justify paying extra per month for their data plan, I would get an iPhone in a heartbeat. Having the iPod Touch, I can tell you that they are by far the coolest thing.

2 of my brothers have the 3G iPhone and they love it.

I guess the Data Plan is must have for the iPhone then right?

I believe you can't get an iPhone without getting the data plan.

For what it's worth, we've had ATT for four or five years and have never had a problem. We used to have Verizon and got so sick of it, I cancelled everything and switched to ATT

Yup. And you can't share data plans, so if you get two, that means 2 data plans.

Our budget will only be able to handle one for now, I won't push it.

I can't really say I've been unhappy with Verizon, so when it comes down to it, my true motivation is the iPhone. Just gotta have that toy!!

For those who like the Touch so much, you can now make calls from it thru Truphone. Just gotta get a headset with a mic. Yes, it works! My son is using it. Phone calls, lots of apps, and no monthly fee. Gotta have wi-fi.

With the 1st generation iPod Touch too?

As long as AT&T has coverage (especially if 3G) then the iPhone is worth it. If not, then maybe an iPod Touch

No cell provider is all that great--it's just a matter of how bad! You can have good luck or bad luck with any of them. I get the impression you're more likely to have good luck with Verizon, and it's good that you have--but plenty of people have bad experiences with them, and your good experience could always turn bad next year. Staying with Verizon is no guarantee. Likewise, lots of people have a good experience with AT&T. You might be one of those lucky ones, or you might not.

My experience with AT&T has been mixed. The coverage works, so that's the main thing! When I have to CALL them, it's an endless nightmare. (You can combine DSL and a mobile phone in one account for some savings. I did so and canceled my land line. This process was a nightmare--but it ended.) Service depends on who you get on the phone: each person knows (or invents) something different and contradictory. And my bills have gone up and down wildly as they try to sort out combining the services.

Yet the iPhone is still worth it. An unbeatable pocket computer, with Internet ANYWHERE. Nothing is as useful AND usable, and I'd never go back to another phone.

But, if there was ONE thing I could change/add..ok two things...is the option for 3G and a camera.

Imagine if AT&T had a package deal where you could get 3G for $5 a month! yeah, right...as if AT&T would do us the favor.

I have verizon, and enjoy the same relationship with the company that every one else does. I have what I think is the very last razr, a black thing, with a glass touch screen front cover. It supposedly does all kind of tricks, but at what cost? I am so cheap on my cell plan, I have texting disabled. If you have something to say to me, say it. If I don't want to be bothered now, I turn off the ringer and will catch your voicemail. The coverage is the best. I can give and take calls from airplanes, helicopters, the basement, etc. We have three phones, and the bill is about 82.00 a month. I do not use my phone as a GPS, at 9 bucks a month, I have a GPS for that.
I do find the iPhone attractive and easy to use, but, I am just not interested in paying that much extra to have internet access in my pocket everywhere. Also, I keep my phone in my front pocket, and don't think an iphone would ride there comfortable. Smart phone? iPhone? Touch? Maybe, some day. But, we all work and live fairly close to our computers for the time being, and have not yet developed the need for eMail on the beach, so we're sticking with the big cranky V for the time being. As for ring tones - I just record them in to the phone (old-timey brass bells phone ringers) and pictures to the lappy through bluetooth works just fine. If there was an all-included iPhone family plan for what I'm paying now, I'd be right there. But for now, I use my phone simple for phone calls.

We have texting because that's the only way we can communicate with my son. Otherwise we'd get rid of it. I don't use the phone often enough to justify anything as fancy and expensive as an iPhone.

Agreed on both counts.
I'm lucky that my ISP has pretty much covered the Bay Area with wifi hot spots, but it would be nice to connect whenever, wherever I am.
Is that what 3G would do? (I don't even own a cell phone! )
Oh well, they have to save something for future models, RIGHT?

Maybe a 5 meg camera with a "flash" ? and built in video with audio
Maybe 4G instead of the slower 3G , since Sprint already has that
Maybe open to all providers since almost all have the copied visual voice mail feature
Maybe uses the Boxee.TV enhance "flash" video tech built in

I doubt 4G since they are with AT&T, not Sprint.
I doubt they open up to all carriers.
And definately not Boxee, since that allows other formats to play and it's still in beta.
Flash would be a software upgrade, not a hardware one.

I'm guessing different internal stuff (faster) and more storage.

Even though the battery life is pretty good, a longer battery life and built in AV , plus more storage is a big plus in my book.
