Good grief I actually liked diagramming sentences in grade school but that might have been the last time i had ever thought of it.

The direct object is "his way," not the phrase, which you've correctly identified as an adverbial prepositional phrase. If I could imbed ( ) a sound file, I'd put in this one.

For some reason I liked prepositional phrases. Maybe because they were easy to spot but then they were so devious and could trick you.
