For the most delicious political theater in my lifetime. Dingy Harry will have to seat Burris, and there is nothing he can do about it. The Supreme Court has already ruled on the matter....40 years ago.
Burris might be a good man ... it's too bad he has to get the Blago taint.
Also, Joe Biden still has not dropped out of the race, McCain still hasn't won Ohio, Rahm isn't fired and Obama still hasn't been proven to be joined at the hip to Blago's crimes ... so my money's on Reid that there is something he can do about it.
Reid may get off the hook. Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White says he'll reject any paperwork that Gov. Rod Blagojevich files to name a new U.S. senator
"There is a point of view, as expressed by former Republican Illinois Gov. Jim Thompson on All Things Considered Tuesday, that the Illinois secretary of state has no power to refuse certification and the Senate has no power to refuse to seat an appointee who meets constitutional requirements. These are issues that may have to be determined in court, particularly if the Senate ends up with multiple appointments for Obama's former seat."
Disclaimer: Jesse White has purchased some of my photographs.

RM had Burris on her show last night. He may be a decent man and a dedicated public servant, but as far as elections go, he's lost nearly every one he's run in. He's been dubbed a "lovable loser." His rationale for accepting the appointment is that Blago has a responsibility to provide Illinois with it's requisite full representation. Fine and dandy, except that while under investigation (and probably under indictment within a few days), his real responsibility is to cool his jets until the investigation (or its next steps) is resolved.
First Blago's attorney says, on camera, that the Gov. will comply with the Senate order and NOT make an appointment, then a week later, he defies said order and appoints a former AG who has contributed some $14K to Blago & Co. Those contributions may have been perfectly legitimate and well-intended, but just the immediate appearance should have been enough reason for Burris to either decline or delay his acceptance.
Got to feel some pain for IL citizens having to go through all of this mess. (Here in CA all we had to deal with is Cheney's secret energy committee blackmailing our democratic governor and the national GOP effort to force his recall and then the election of another republican movie star to pretend to run the state but actually turn it inside out ... but at least the super-rich got tax breaks )
