This is delicious on so many levels...I'll let you guys try to defend it. 1...2....3......GO!
CHICAGO (AP) - President-elect Barack Obama will keep Defense Secretary Robert Gates in that job for at least a year, according to an official familiar the two men's discussions. Obama is expected to announce the selection of Gates and other members of a national security brain trust next week. Gates has served as President George W. Bush's defense chief for two years. Gates, a moderate with long-standing ties to Republican administrations and the Bush family, would fulfill an Obama pledge to include a Republican in his Cabinet. Retaining Gates provides stability for a stretched military fighting two wars during the turbulent changeover in administrations. Gates once said it was inconceivable that he would stay on past the close of Bush's term on Jan. 20. But the 65-year-old former spymaster had recently turned mum in public on the circumstances under which he would stay, even briefly, in an Obama administration. Keeping Gates might afford Obama a sort of extended transition, in which critical military issues are left in trusted hands while Obama focuses most intensely on the financial crisis.
Make up your mind already. First you whine that there are too many Clinton people being brought to the game. Now retaining a Bush appointee is kvetch bait for you. And it won't be the Bush Iraq Policy because Bush will no longer be Gates' boss for however long he stays in that seat. Jebus, Bryan, is there no pleasing you?
DItto to SteveG and Svend... he could be taking a good manager-Gates (compared to Bush's poor one Rummy) and directing him to oversee the phased withdrawal. I think it's pretty savvy and smart, and Bipartisan... something not seen around these parts since Clinton !
I've never said all Republicans are dumb, and evil... some are pretty smart, good people ... too bad none of them are leaders in the current GOP. It takes a big person to keep the good ones and throw out the crummy-Rummies !
Gates worked under Bush 1 when he was head of the CIA. No one ever "leaves" The Company... Gates is a "Bushie" through & through! Obama said he would pull out Combat TROOPS from Iraq, not the Mercenaries & "Contractors". Bush has "rigged the the Game" of This Occupation & it will last at least 4 more years. The Afghan War another 10 years & the Second Great Depression also another 10 years. In the end, the US will walk away with NOTHING and 2 more countyries will hate us for 50 years after that. Aint Bush Grand?
What about Obama? Obvoiusly he feels that in Foreign Policy "The more things Change, the more they should STAY THE SAME. Still, unlike Bush, he's no Fascist! We have a four year resumption of The Constitution. But Obama thinks his adversaries are just "Misguided Republicans". They are Fascists, and they WILL BE BACK! The Billionaires are still calling the shots, and they liked having a Puppet President... Sarah Palin would be a Perfect Fit!
