Please advise how to network my desktop and my laptop. Both Macs are G4 Power macs and Powerbooks and are running OS10.4.11. I have Airport on both, connecting to DSL on a server.

Do you mean that they're connecting to DSL via a router? If so, then what Reboot suggests is really all you need to do. Turn on file sharing. In the Finder sidebar, when you click on the Network icon, you should see the remote computer. Click on the computer's name and you should get a dialogue asking for username and password. Type those, and you're in.
