I've no idea how/why this happened, but I thought Time Machine was broken - turned out that Leopard had taken it upon itself to add my startup volume to the Exclude list not only in TM, but in Spotlight too. All fixed now, but what the hell was that all about?
It took me a while to figure out, because all TM does if the startup volume is Excluded is say Failed - no clue as to why. I happened to look in the Options section because I'd just discovered that Spotlight had done this, and it made me wonder...
