I can't recall dining anywhere that the waiter/waitress simply dropped the bill on the table without asking us if we were ready. Sure, they are a little more urgent in a fast paced location/type of eatery. Most will take care of the transaction for you, also. In high end settings, the wait staff has always been attentive (not intrusive) and encouraged us to stay as long as we liked. Of course, down at the local greasy spoon, it's pay at the cashier on the way out.<br><br>
I would ask for the bill when they pick up the plates and thats about the time when they ask for anything else. Pet peeve is having to look for the server for the check more so at breakfast or lunch , ya got to go somewhere, diner I can sit around.<br><br>If with a group of people and I wanted to pay for the bill , I would ask the server at time of ordering "bring the check to me" . If dutch here we don't ask for separate checks we just divide "everyone 15 bucks each" covers tip too.<br><br>"Please pay Cashier"<br>I don't like paying at the cashier , this normally means standing in another line which pisses me off , more so if the line is really long. Sometimes I would just leave the money on the table and walk out<br><br>

Usually I'm more in a hurry to get the bill than they are to give it to me. But then there is the Land Ho! pub, where the bartender who is going off duty rings a ship's bell behind the bar, to let us know that it's time to "pony up" on our tab if we want to give him a tip before he leaves. Of course, that's when it's just a bunch of us hanging around the bar, running up a tab... Not like when someone is having a sit-down dinner.<br><br>
I don't give a hoot what kind of restaurant it is. I don't want to wait for the check. So have the waiter lay down the check when they bring the food. At that time they should tell me to ask for if I need anything else.<br><br>Also. Keep my tea glass or coffee cup filled. Don't ask just fill it up. I don't drink alcohol so do this for me. <br><br>dave<br><br><br><br>

One thing is obvious from reading these posts. Americans are always in a rush. Very different from other parts of the world where dining is a leisurely experience. This is not a put down, just an observation about different lifestyles. <br><br>I know I've had to make adjustments in my attitude while travelling. Things are different almost anywhere else you go. Take lunch for example. All my years working I was only allowed 30 minutes to jam food down then back to work. Some jobs allow an hour. Many places I've travelled have 2 hour lunch breaks. North Americans truly live the rat race lifestyle.<br><br>
