Which Lacie exactly? Is it bus powered?

Is it the one shaped like a Mini, and if so is it under or on top of the Mini? If so move it off of the Mini and see what happens.

------>#1 - JD's Trivia game

------>#2 - MM-MCF Trivia game
Its the Mini one and no Mac Mini on top - I placed the Lacie on top of a CD case because the fan vents is at the bottom which I felt was not enough air circulation and still the fan went on forever until I unplugged it

I thought it might be heat coming off of the Mini fooling the LaCie sensors.

Is it the 500G? They have something called a smart fan, more like a duh fan it sounds like.

------>#1 - JD's Trivia game

------>#2 - MM-MCF Trivia game
