The biggest news was the new Touch:

* Internal speaker

* Mic input on headphone jack (and new optional headphones with mic)

* Volume buttons

* Built in Nike receiver

* Thinner

* Longer battery life

* 2.1 OS (only minor new features: genius playlist and Nike app, and a bunch of performance/stability improvements)

* About $100 cheaper

* More chrome than you can shake a stick at

nagr[color:red]omme

I require stroyent!
TeamMacOSX.com | MacClan.net
Glad you picked up on the recording feature. ;)

I recall a year ago, we had some heated debates at MCF, with me claiming that a good recording program would be a natural for the iPod and some claiming there'd be no market for it.

Now, if the Touch could be made to record not just mp3 but also 44.1MHz or even higher, that would make me buy one immediately and probably many thousands of others, who are currently using iRiver and Cowan player/recorders and would gladly change, if only, to get easy compatibility and file transfer.
Mind you, the Touch would need something like a Finder, I guess.

I think recording facilities are a huge feature to add ... as long as it goes beyond the basic dictation machine level.

I wouldn't hold your breath. The mic input is mono only I'm sure, and probably not intended for anything high quality.

Now, the dock connector can theoretically send ANY kind of data, as long as the SDK allows devs to work with it. So there's potential there for high-quality audio in. We haven't yet seen App Store apps that tie in with special hardware, and it's not clear yet that it's even allowed. But the day may come.

As for Finder, most apps seem to rely on sending their files via email, or synching them to a server. I'd like to see that advance to a real file manager, or at LEAST allow Mac/PC apps to access app data when connected and take it further. So an iPhone audio app could have a companion Mac app that displays your recordings on synch.

In the case of audio, though, iTunes itself is already a Finder of sorts, once you get back to your machine. If a recording app would add tracks to your library, that would be a start,

nagr[color:red]omme

I require stroyent!
TeamMacOSX.com | MacClan.net

A high-quality stereo mic (Sony and Sennheiser make some very nice ones) and bingo! The rest is just software. One can only hope that the current "steplet" is just a beginning

[color:blue]I'd like to see that advance to a real file manager, or at LEAST allow Mac/PC apps to access app data when connected and take it further.

That's how FileMagnet - with its companion app - is doing it. It appears to reserve a flexible data block and shows it as a distinct volume. But until one can also back up these data blocks, everything vanishes, when the app (or any, for that matter) misbehaves and requires a rebuild. Not so hot.

Have you tried this new iTunes8 "feature" yet?
I did. I let Apple have the details of my music collection and then, anxiously, awaited the suggestions for interesting thematic play-lists.
Perhaps I was doing something wrong, but all I got were buying suggestions. What a surprise!

With classical music, these suggestions amounted to little more than additional recordings by the same composer or soloist. With German pop music, the Genius ventured a little farther afield, suggesting additional German song writers.
But in no case did I receive, as I had been led to expect, a new thematic playlist using my existing music *without* also buying anything new.

That's not a feature, that's more of Apple trying to sell me something at each and every turn.

So, now the iTunes store is hidden once again ..... and I wish there were a way to dumb it from my iPhone as well.
