I never owned a cell phone before, but I was under the impression (I'm in the US) that you would see the caller ID of the calling party. But all I ever see is the number. And when I look in history, it knows the city of origin, but not the name. (Unless the name is in my Contacts, then I DO see it--but that's not caller ID.)

It's not that everyone is blocking their ID, because I call myself from my landline (I don't block) and still don't see it.

Just wondering. It would be nice to see a caller ID and know whether to bother answering.

nagr[color:red]omme

I require stroyent!
TeamMacOSX.com | MacClan.net

You'll see the name if you have that in your Contacts on the phone. Otherwise you'll se the number, except for when it says "Unknown Caller" or "Private Caller." Those I just ignore. I think there is a service that you can pay for that gives you the ID of the caller even if you don't have the number in your Contacts. Being cheap, though, I don't have that.

[color:red] [color:orange] [color:yellow] [color:green] [color:blue] [color:purple]

I see. I thought caller ID was just an expected part of cell service. I guess my (non-iPhone) friends must be paying for it as an option! I know I can block caller ID when I call them if I want to do a fake voice and annoy them. That wouldn't work if they relied on their address book.

So I have no way to tell whether a caller is a telemarketer eating up my minutes, or new freelance job! Nice of AT&T to tell me that when they were explaining how to defeat telemarketers (which have been hell for me).

Let's just hope they don't get a hold of my new number

nagr[color:red]omme

I require stroyent!
TeamMacOSX.com | MacClan.net

Like I said, if it's an Unknown of a Private line, I just don't answer the call. In fact, I usually don't answer the phone unless it's someone in my Contacts list. I haven't talked to a telemarketer in years

[color:red] [color:orange] [color:yellow] [color:green] [color:blue] [color:purple]

Ah, the joys of being a freelancer. That unknown caller could pay for my iPhone!

nagr[color:red]omme

I require stroyent!
TeamMacOSX.com | MacClan.net

Hey, if it's someone who really wants to talk to you, you'll get a message. One interesting thing I've done from time to time is to Google a number from where I've gotten a call but that isn't in my address book. Almost 100% of the time, there'll be warnings about the number on line.

[color:red] [color:orange] [color:yellow] [color:green] [color:blue] [color:purple]

I've had my iPhone since Christmas and have received fewer than 10 telemarketing call... and those include the Democratic campaign calls.

I haven't any of those other messages... but I seen Call Blocked from someone trying to get through to me.

[image][/image]

My problem (hopefully never to be repeated) was credit collections firms, actually--sometimes really nasty and rude, naturally. This harassment was never actually for me (I owe nothing), but I got dozens of calls looking or OTHER names. Calls from many different companies, asking for DOZENS of different names. I'd tell them they had a wrong number and they'd call back asking for some other name. I traced some numbers--some were legitimate legal collections companies, who apologized and didn't know how my number got on someone else's name. But they'd still call again, and they said there was nothing they could do to prevent it from repeating. The phone company also told me there was nothing I could do. How could this happen? Nobody has been able to suggest an explanation. But it went on for 3 years--sometimes many calls a day, sometimes in the middle of he night--and enough was enough. (Some were loud screeching faxes in my ear, too.)

That's why I changed my number and did NOT let the recording at the old number give the new one.

And that in turn means that contacts I've made over the years who I gave my number to will not be able to reach me. Unfortunately, much of my income comes from informal contacts like that, who vanish for years and then pull me out of their rolodex.

Phone harassment: 1.
