I am now in a house which is protected from civilization by a hill of granite on one side and the ocean on the other three sides. Great for my nerves but I need a cell phone signal which seems to just make it over the granite and grazes the third floor attic.

But the attic is hot and I would rather be on the front porch in my rocker.

Internet searches show many ways to stick stuff into your attic and bathe your house with cell phone signal.

Question: has anyone used any of these things? There are the 200-300 dollar ones that sound good but it could be a total scam. Do any really work?

As you know cell phones are just radios, so all you need is the proper antenna and amplifier.

I've been thinking of doing this myself, as I get so so reception outside the house, but inside I get just about zero signal anywhere but my front window.

What you want is something like this: linky

Either the in building or signal boost one.

Basically, it's an outside antenna, an amplifier, and an inside antenna.

Hey I'm an F'n Jerk!®

That first Wilson solution of an antennae in the attic is a buy but the nearest store is Seabrook New Hampshire. I can actually see the nuclear power plant in Seabrook from my front porch on a clear day but it is a long drive up the coast.

I can sit on the roof to send but waiting for a call gets tedious. If I leave it up there I can usually hear it ring using the most obnoxious old time phone ring on high but most of the time I miss it. And if it is a visitor willing to stop and buy gin and fried clams it is very sad when I miss it.

They have cell phone enhancers and I'm sure they could ship it to you so you wouldn't have to visit a physical store.

Here's a link to a search I did:

cell phone signal extenders

Hope that helps.

"It is better to light one candle than to curse the darkness."

You could work the cell phone thing into the wireless access, tricking your neighbor into thinking the router antenna is to improve your cell phone service ;)

Hey I'm an F'n Jerk!®

[color:blue]And where do I put this 18 inches? (do not say "that's what she said".) - On your roof on the side that needs the reception --> not onless you feel your arse is bigger -

As mentioned before did you try that simple bare copper wire ? #12 cut exactly 18 inches long
Isn't that a carry over from short wave radio and am radio days. You would make a wire to those specs and "attach" it to your radios terminals.

How's that gonna work for a cell?

[image][/image]

I can't remember if you have an iPhone (are signed up for at least one year with AT&T) or not, but T-Mobile has a really compelling line of UMA phones. These are phones that place calls through your Wi-Fi Internet connection if there is one available. For an extra ten dollars on the plan, all of those minutes are "free" too.

It's not what you are looking at, but it might be useful for other people who have trouble using their cell phones at home.

-- Cee Bee Double-U

It simply brings in a effective antenna - which would then broadcast

Sometimes the simplest solution will work - or you can get all convoluted about it. Try it , if not then make this post
