While the iPhone is charging (in car or home) can you keep the screen on forever without it going dark or going to sleep?

I like that about my iPod, as a "now-playing" display for music. And when I get one with a car charger, I'll want it for Maps as well.

(I have no intention of touching the thing while driving, but I'll set it to either play music or track me before I set out. I'm considering iTrip AutoPilot for skipping tracks, which my old iPod does via my wristwatch.)

TIA

PS, it just ocurred to me how much better portrait orientation would be for a driving GPS. Why are all GPS's widescreen? Do you want to see what's ahead or do you want to see irrelevant stuff at the sides?

nagr[color:red]omme

I require stroyent!
TeamMacOSX.com | MacClan.net

I'll worry about how later I'm sure it's someplace obvious in Settings.

I just wanted to know if it could be done, since it would affect how serious I get about rigging my car for my upcoming iPhone. If it can stay always-on, I'll probably look at some kind of mount. (I don't like clamps/clips--I just want a loose "holster." Off to my local Mac store to browse!)

nagr[color:red]omme

I require stroyent!
TeamMacOSX.com | MacClan.net

I see. I could just leave it like that full-time, and lock manually under normal use. That's annoying with my current iPod because you have to hold Menu for a time to turn off the screen, but I know it's one touch on an iPhone.

If you set auto-lock to "never" will the screen still go dark after a time when not connected to power?

nagr[color:red]omme

I require stroyent!
TeamMacOSX.com | MacClan.net

Cool. Thanks!

I've been checking out road test videos of the Maps app with GPS in action, and even if no other GPS app ever appears, it will serve me very well. It will follow along where I am--with satellite images!--and can plot a route from point to point. It also animates very smoothly. I don't absolutely need turn-by-turn voice guidance, and north-up orientation is acceptable. And I have good 3G coverage where I usually travel, so pre-stored maps aren't vital.

So if a "real" GPS app shows up (for driving and/or hiking) that will be just the icing on the cake.

I'll just be glad to have a GPS (finally!) and one that I don't have to worry about theft of (because I won't be leaving my phone in the car).

nagr[color:red]omme

I require stroyent!
TeamMacOSX.com | MacClan.net
In General Settings have Auto-Lock set to "Never".

That's good to know... thanks. Don't remember seeing that before...

[image][/image]

... I think there are several reasons for the landscape orientation (which itself could be a hint):

1) there is need for control buttons and stuff, and so, as with the first wide-screen laptops, horizontal makes sense
2) while one drives ahead, often the more important things are curves and turn offs ... in larger view these things are best shown in a lateral set-up
3) a wide-screen set-up makes for more stable mounting
