Troops on the ground?
There have been US troops on Georgian ground for some time now!
And seeing that Russia is essentially asking the US now to Choose us or Georgia! , this does not look good at all!

[color:blue][/b]Hodie mihi. Cras tibi.[/b]
Your link went somewhere else but the The Guardian is here <----.

Williams' analysis is rather shallow. He omits the fact that East European NATO inducedments are based on the notion of protection from an attack by Iran which is in the same league of absurdity as was Saddam's ability to strike the West within 45 minutues. He fails to recognise the difference between the legitimate use of force to protect ones own nationals from atrocity as in Georgia and the illegitimite use of force as practised by the West in Iraq, The Russians are not going to allow a massacre of their people by an unprincipled upstart Western ally like Georgia for some vague supposed benefit of good relations with Washington no matter what blackmail it seeks to exert. Old Europe not only vetoed US overtures towards Georgia but was right to do so and the best thing Washington can do now is butt out and mind its own business.

km

From a purely domestic US perspective one thing that this imbroglio has done is to open lots of eyes about the danger of NATO-izing all of non-Russian Europe.

[color:red] [color:orange] [color:yellow] [color:green] [color:blue] [color:purple]

NATO has servied its purpose and should be dismantled now in my opinion. I've never met anyone who believes it's necessary to defend against an attack by Iran. Don't Dubya and his pals realise how stupid they sound to billions of Europeans coming out with rubbish like that?

km
