Stopped off at Monument Valley in Utah this summer.

got this

Waited two hours for the sun to go down. The facilities there had closed down for renovation so it became a choice of leaving to find a restroom and taking the shots a half hour too early or ... Well, not option really, I guess.

After working at it in PS a bit don't think it's too bad.

I challenge you to find a "reasonable" motel in Kayenta Arizona. Again not a choice really.

You're on the back deck of the Navajo welcome center. It was open the last time I was there. Don't stay in Kayenta. It is all John Wayneized. Worst thing to happen there was John Wayne and "Stagecoach" was shot there.

Next time you are there just drive up 163 to Mexican Hat and take a right. Continue past the hat on 163 east to Bluff, Utah and stay at The Decker House
The couple that run the bed and breakfast our great and very reasonable rates. (Can't be more than an hours drive from your shot.) Stayed their several times. First time was going to be just an overnight and stayed the week. Ask her about the swimming hole just a walk up the hill.

Found it. I took the same shot but I am 50 feet over inside the Navajo gift shop getting bored while my daughter is going through all the shlock trinkets for gifts to friends back home. I shot this through the window left mitt:

[edit]
Yours is a much nicer shot. I can only plead that my wife's point and shoot was the only thing handy and these funky Navajo warriors kept jumping up and spoiling the picture. Nothing photoshopped.

Edited by polymerase on 07/11/08 06:52 AM (server time).

Shoot, I must have a better screen on this laptop since I never noticed that my daughter and I are in that picture reflected in the window. And that dude on the right starred in that Karen Black Trilogy of Terror made for TV movie and gave me nightmares.

I didn't go north there because I knew if I started North I would want to go on up to the other places like Arches etc. I was heading East from Kayenta the next morning. I don't do Bread and Bs but rather just have a simple, say cheap, motel. The Best Western there in Kayenta was $140 by the time I was through. For just me I don't like to pay that much for just one night. I had budgeted around $75 for each night and was able to find a few at that and below. Interesting that one of the nicest motels was in Coalinga CA for $46. Of course it is a bit off the beaten path but still nice, and Kayenta is close to the Monument Valley.

I have been there before back in the 80's or early 90s.

There at the Navaho station they are building a new Hotel so some of the facilites there are layed up. And this was on Sunday late in the evening near the Summer Solstice so it was late.

dave

You can get a room at the Decker House for $75 with breakfast and wireless but you would have had to reserve it weeks ahead during the summer.
I know what you mean about just further north. Needles, Capital Reef and then Arches and the next thing you know you are in Grand Junction.

I stayed in a couple of places in Kayenta a long was back and you're right it was all in the 140 range. Stayed in my share of Best Westerns all through that area up to Torrey at Capital Reef, over to Moab. But then we took notes so we hit these out of the way B and B's and get a slice of life. In Moab we stayed at a ranch owned by Seldom Seen. Seldom is still around even though Edward Abbey is long gone. Abbey spent the last few months of his life at Seldom's ranch.

We'll be out there next August. Every odd year we go out there for the past twenty at least.
