not sure it impacted my life, but i always like a saying from the great John Wooden that goes a little something like this:

Things tend to turn out best for those people who make the most out of the way things turn out.

--
[color:red] Kansas Jayhawks -- 2008 National Champions

Amen to that, Reboot!

I had to use a typewriter at work today (we keep one in the reference area for emergencies). What I needed to do was center a heading on a pre-existing document that had already been signed by someone who wasn't around to sign it again (we had his permission to fix the heading, of course).

Talk about bad flashbacks! I had to count the number of letters and spaces, divide by two, center the type head (or whatever it's called), and backspace the result of my division.

All that just to center a single line of text! ARRGGHHH! I don't miss those days. Nope... Not at all... :-)

It's in my sig every post!

Too many lives they've spent across the ocean. Too much money been spent upon the moon. Well, until they make it right, I hope they never sleep at night. They better make some changes and do it soon. -Things Goin' On/Lynyrd Skynyrd

First off, It is interesting that folks tend to quote others in movies, songs, and books.

But what I like is what my daughter said to me some years ago. She said, "Dad, nothing will change unless something changes".

That really hit me and is right on the money. So many people keep doing the same things but expect a different outcome. The out come won't change unless the input changes. At least it would be a mutant if it did.

So if one wants his life to change then he/she must do somethign different. Just something to get things going in a different direction. Remindes me of a Roy Clark song (i think it was him but could be Tom T Hall). It was in a song, "Right or left at Elm Street". About a guy who for a long time left home for work and at Elm street he turned to his work. He always thought about what would happen if one day he turned left instead of right, But he still kept turning right.

Thought of that plight alot.

dave

I like that one, MrB. "Nothing will change unless something changes."

"You have to know when to hold them, know when to fold them, know when to walk away, and know when to run..." comes to mind for some odd reason...

John Wooden was one of life's great men, as well as the greatest coach ever. I've got a recording of some boiled down essence, and thought I'd gotten around to a digital transcription, but all I've got so far is a handwritten transcription. So, did a quick hunt for these great quotes. There's a few redundancies, as they're from multiple sources:

“Sports do not build character. They reveal it.”

“Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.”

“If you're not making mistakes, then you're not doing anything. I'm positive that a doer makes mistakes.”

“You can't let praise or criticism get to you. It's a weakness to get caught up in either one.”

“Don't let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.”

“Success comes from knowing that you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming.”

“Talent is God given. Be humble. Fame is man-given. Be grateful. Conceit is self-given. Be careful.”

“It's the little details that are vital. Little things make big things happen.”

“Don't measure yourself by what you have accomplished, but what you should have accomplished with your ability.”

“If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?”

“Ability may get you to the top, but it takes character to keep you there.”

“Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming.”

"Never mistake activity for achievement."

“Success is never final, failure is never fatal. It's courage that counts.”

"Failure is not fatal, but failure to change might be."

“Things turn out best for people who make the best out of the way things turn out”

“A coach is someone who can give correction without causing resentment.”

“You can't live a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to repay you.”

“It isn't what you do, but how you do it.”

“It's not so important who starts the game but who finishes it.”

“For an athlete to function properly, he must be intent. There has to be a definite purpose and goal if you are to progress. If you are not intent about what you are doing, you aren't able to resist the temptation to do something else that might be more fun at the moment.”

“The main ingredient of stardom is the rest of the team.”

“Material possessions, winning scores, and great reputations are meaningless in the eyes of the Lord, because He knows what we really are and that is all that matters.”

“Although I wanted my players to work to win, I tried to convince them they had always won when they had done their best.”

“Young people need models, not critics”

“Winning takes talent, to repeat takes character.”

“It is what we learn after we know it all that really counts”

“Consider the rights of others before your own feelings, and the feelings of others before your own rights.”

“I'd rather have a lot of talent and a little experience than a lot of experience and a little talent.”

“Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.”

“The worst thing about new books is that they keep us from reading the old ones.”

“You cannot attain and maintain physical condition unless you are morally and mentally conditioned. And it is impossible to be in moral condition unless you are spiritually conditioned. I always told my players that our team condition depended on two factors / how hard they worked on the floor during practice and how well they behaved between practices.”

“Be prepared and be honest.”

“Adversity is the state in which man mostly easily becomes acquainted with himself, being especially free of admirers then.”

“Ability is a poor man's wealth.”

“Things turn out best for the people who make the best of the way things turn out.”

“I always tried to make clear that basketball is not the ultimate. It is of small importance in comparison to the total life we live. There is only one kind of life that truly wins, and that is the one that places faith in the hands of the Savior. Until that is done, we are on an aimless course that runs in circles and goes nowhere.”

“What you are as a person is far more important that what you are as a basketball player.”

“Our land is everything to us... I will tell you one of the things we remember on our land. We remember that our grandfathers paid for it - with their lives.”

Happiness begins where selfishness ends.

Earn the right to be proud and confident.

The best way to improve the team is to improve us.

Big things are accomplished only through the perfection of minor details.

Discipline yourself and others won't need to

Ability may get you to the top, but it takes character to keep you there.

I will get ready and then, perhaps, my chance will come.

If you do not have the time to do it right, when will you find the time to do it over?

The smallest good deed is better than the best intention.

The man who is afraid to risk failure seldom has to face success.

Don't let yesterday take up too much of today.

Time spent getting even would be better spent trying to get ahead.

It is what you learn after you know it all that counts.

Consider the rights of others before your own feelings, and the feelings of others before your own rights.

There is nothing stronger than gentleness.

You discipline those under your supervision to correct, to help, to improve - not to punish.

Goals achieved with little effort are seldom worthwhile or lasting.

Make sure the team members know they're working with you, not for you.

Be most interested in find the best way , not in having your own way .

What is right is more important than who is right.

You handle things. You work with people.

As long as you try your best, you are never a failure. That is, unless you blame others.

Tell the truth. That way you don't have to remember a story.

Don't let making a living present you from making a life.

Although there is no progress without change, not all change is progress.

If I am through learning, I am through.

The best thing a father can do for his children is to love their mother.

If I were ever prosecuted for my religion, I truly hope there would be enough evidence to convict me.

If we magnified blessings as much as we magnifiy dissappointments, we would all be much happier.

Do not permit what you cannot do to interfere with what you can do.

Be more concerned with you character than with your reputation.
