The contents? "Electric computers," a term that Apple has never before used on its customs declarations.

Additionally, 67 of the containers were destined for Canada, landing in Vancouver, BC.

These containers are not to be confused with Apple's regular flotilla of shipping destined for the west coast. Typically, those containers are labeled as having "desktop computers" inside on their customs forms.

ImportGenius.com speculates that each container could contain up to 40,000 units of new iPhones.

Wonder what these are?! I can't believe that the iPhone has been out of stock this long at the online Applestore.

[color:white]I'm also the Moderator here

my photos

The iPhone has been unavailable on Apple's online store since near the beginning of the month. There have been severe shortages in the retail stores since March with most being completely out of stock since mid April.

If the stories of the high volume of new phones are true then that's consistent with my speculation that Apple ceased production sometime in March in order to ramp up inventory of the next gen phone.

Don't forget, unlike the first roll out, the iPhone is hitting the shelves world wide, not just the US.

The speculation is.... what he heck is in those cartons? One person on another forum jokingly suggested it was a new and improved Mighty Mouse.

Geez, we sound like a bunch of Apple fangirls/fanboys

Someone at MacRumors did the math and something's fishy about the report (or at least points away from iPhones). Doing the math based on 504 units suggests that each unit weighs 20 pounds. Or 30, if the weight of the container is subtracted.

Note that "cartons" are the items INSIDE the "containers." Shipping "containers" are giant things (like half a boxcar), and supposedly in this case each contains 504 cartons.

I looked up some weights on Apple's largest products FWIW:

Mac Pro 42 pounds
Xserve 32 pounds
30" Cinema Display 28 pounds
24" iMac 25 pounds

http://www.macrumors.com/2008/05/23/3g-iphone-other-new-device-in-route-to-us/

I speculate that it might not be products for sale at all, but rather stuff (maybe not even Apple machines) to be installed BY Apple for other reasons, either in stores, call centers or elsewhere.

I also think it's possible that each of the 504 20-lb. "cartons" contains multiple products. (Mac Mini being a lead candidate in my mind, but iPhone 2 is also coming.)

Anyway, I don't think the report is necessarily fiction, just that some piece of info is garbled or missing.

nagr[color:red]omme

I require stroyent!
TeamMacOSX.com | MacClan.net
So, why couldn't there be x amount of iPhones inside each carton?

[color:white]I'm also the Moderator here

my photos
