Here's my "beef" Whinton...
I work 2 place that are arrogantly dominated by "Windows Only"...
try to reason with IT, Macs do have a place for many functions (creative abilities) and they say NO way .. the Windows system fscks up, they have security / virus updates every damm week which knocks stuff and peripherals off the network - they put them back on and next week repeat ... , they spend endless hours holding the networks together with "bailing wire" but refuse to admit how flawed it is... maybe it's because of their "job security" might be threatened... so talk about Mac pride... we'll many of us are sick of hearing it from the other side that's FUBAR.

People are now seeing we were correct... H3LL all I ever wanted was a mixed network. I wasn't asking them to dump their trashy things.... just open the door for mine to be included. At CDC we had a mixed environment 10 years ago, and I operated my Mac for about 15 years with little to NO IT support - I think that's what scared them. Their IT empire tech support might be cut in half or less.

So that's where I'm coming from... I don't give a hoot what they use... it's their headache but don't tie my hands with their shtty OS and network, and expect me to be happy using it.

I can't tell you how many seminars and meetings I've gone to at CDC where they spent the first 15 min trying to get the damm Dells to interface and work with the projector ! These are dedicated PCs... not ones brought in... H3LL I carry my MacBook many places to give talks and only once did I ever have any problem... turned out it was the projector switch on the wall.

David (OFI)

First you say who gives a damn what other people think about a computer choice but then you admit that you stayed away from the Macintosh because of the way Macophiles thought of their computers?

You do care what people think and you made a poor choice because of it. But now you corrected it.

In reply to:

Though my thoughts about Mac users still stands....even on this thread there is such an arrogant dismissive attitude towards PC users.

Of course you do. This is a 100% Macintosh forum. Of course we are arrogant and dismissive about anyone still using a Windows PC.

Gawd is this what we get because people switch?

I just don't know why but no one ever mentions windows or windows users or the old my football team is better than yours.
Windows users have always been welcome on Mac forums to my knowledge.
They are asked to talk about windows in windows threads only because of one reason only. It is a Mac forum.
OK it is not like black and white segregation but the truth of it is that Mac users either know nothing about windows .. or know way too much about windows from work and don't want to talk about windows.

Mac users either know nothing about windows .. or know way too much about windows

Actually, Mac users are well aware of Windows. That's why we chose Macs over Windows machines. OTOH, many PC users tend to have no hands on experience with the Mac OS.

Hiya whinton... good article... lots of nice (and true) things you write about the mac.
We try not to be arrogant/dismissive. Truly.
The majority of the world has been sneering down their noses at our over-priced, pretty, graphics machines that aren't any good in the "real" business world.
Huh?... a processor is a processor.
They proclaim there aren't as "many apps for Macs as there are for Windows">
True... but I'm having a devil of a time weeding my way through the 20,000 apps for the Mac.

Tons of FUD and idiocy has perhaps made us a bit touchy.
But, now, finally... the world is seeing viable alternatives to the bloatware that is Windows.
Apple has a real advantage right now in being able to quickly turn on a dime and adopt whatever tech is uber-cool and savvy. The MS ship is too big and takes too long to make the slightest course correction.
Of course, some of us view this as a potential for us to lose our anonymity.. which has been good insofar as viruses and protection. Right now there is NOT ONE virus for OS X. But that's gonna change.
Glad to see you made the switch... and to see you write a nice report of your experience.

[image][/image]

Thanks for the 20,000 apps link. It may be just a coincidence that the front page has links to "Papers" and "Screenflow" which I think are the two coolest programs I have run into in a long time. I need to dig deeper. 20,000 apps. I may be gone for a while.

Those scientists are soooo arrogant. That Papers program is not just for you all, you know. Any discipline can use that app.

Sheesh!

edit: Just in case

[color:red] [color:orange] [color:yellow] [color:green] [color:blue] [color:purple]
Edited by yoyo52 on 05/24/08 02:52 PM (server time).

I doubt that. Most pc users at large are pretty ignorant about Macs and probably wouldn't have an opinion about it. But, that's not the same as putting the platform down.

Where all these started was back in the 80's when Macs had a lock on mouse-driven GUI's while pc's still had just the command line. Mac users loved to trumpet that fact while most pc users simply kept quiet because there were no effective counters.

The two coolest platforms back then was the Mac and the Amiga. Naturally, both platforms had their zealots and both ragged on the poor pc to no end. Mac users parroted their superior GUI while Amiga users parroted their superior multimedia capabilities. Again, pc users were at the bottom of the pile.

But, little by little, pc's improved to the point that now (from my perspective), it's simply a matter of preference, not capabilities. Mac users still have loyal fans. But now, so do pc's.

All these baloney about Mac users being victims are just that, a bunch of baloney. They're just as guilty, even more so.

Add: That's not to say pc zealots aren't obnoxious. They are. But, it's good to put things into perspective since most here seem to have left out the above. It's all the more strange because the vast majority of everyone here are old enough to have been using computers back then.
