Well my wife has been raving about that program for months now and I never looked at it since she is more immersed in scientific pdf's as than I get. (I am OCD, mine are all in one folder. All 2,000 of them.) But the description at that site makes me believe I am stupid the way I find them.
I use spotlight. No matter what, I can find the paper I want. But really having a local file is irrelevant because I can always find it online only taking about 20 seconds more.

But your criticism is noted. No reason why "scientists" are the only ones that use research pdfs. Just a racialism of the authors would be my guess.

I would say most Windows users who put the Mac down, know current Macs a LOT less well than Mac users who put Windows down know current Windows.

Which only makes sense since so many of us are forced to use and know Windows at work. People who know only Mac are a lot more rare than people who know only Windows.

And people who are informed and DO know both--real current experience, not a token glance 5 years ago--don't tend to bash Macs. They tend to bash Windows.

That's not always the case, but it's a VERY clear trend. Well-informed Windows-bashers are a lot more common than well-informed Mac-bashers.

I would even say that this sometimes that makes Windows-bashers more annoying than Mac-bashers. Mac-bashers often just sound ignorant. But Windows-bashers, if they actually KNOW both platforms, are much harder to disregard. That makes them VERY annoying to people who have fixed themselves emotionally on a pro-Windows position. In short, being "right" is exactly what some people hate about some Mac fans!

And in that case, there is NO way to be a NON-annoying promoter of Macs. Keep your mouth shut, or you're a zealot. I think, from some people's perspective, it's just about that simple. (I've seen many other parallels in life: if your perspective makes a lot of sense when analyzed fully, there are people who will be up in arms no matter WHAT you say. It makes them that uncomfortable. Especially when it highlights doubts they don't want to admit are lingering in their own minds.)

nagr[color:red]omme

I require stroyent!
TeamMacOSX.com | MacClan.net
Platform bashing has been around ever since there was more than one platform. Whether the fans of one platform are better-informed than the other is irrelevant. It's the same crap over and over and over. Don't you get tired of it? It's one thing if there's a troll baiting people around. But, it's totally different when platform bashing literally comes out of nowhere and people gleefully post any news of misfortune at the other side. There were days when platform bashing threads were more numerous than real Mac threads. Granted, there are sites like ArsT which has the Battlefront designed to channel in zealots from all sides. But, I always thought Maccentral had a touch of class and was above the zealotry. Apparently, that changed and soon Maccentral didn't seem any better than the zealot sites. At that time, I wanted to strengthen the Mac presence here at home. I decided to quit Maccentral for a few years because reading the pc bashing probably would've caused me to be turned off. So, I took a break. In the meantime, the all pc household here became a mixed Mac/pc household. Of course, there's no way I'd switch to just one platform. But, there are now 3 Macs (2 Core Duo Minis and an old iBook 800) where there were none. I't also helped that my daughter goes to a school district that uses Macs. So for better or worse, Macs are now a permanent fixture here.

I came back to Maccentral after what? A 2-3 year absence? And what do I see? Same old crap.I had to wonder if that's the reason why Maccentral's membership seems to have fallen lower and lower. I miss the old Maccentral when I first joined....when it still had class.

Sooo everyone... what happened to Whinton?

are ye he ?

I was really hoping for a serious reply to my comments.

Guess he couldn't make a descent, logical argument.

Figures !!

David (OFI)

My views:

a) When criticising anything, I don't think it's irrelevant how informed the speaker is. I think it's relevant, especially when a clear pattern is there.

b) But yes, I'm sick of juvenile, name-calling platform-bashing of any kind--typically uninformed, too.

c) But I have no problem with Mac users, who are constantly faced with skepticism and ignorance (at best) and outright bashing (at worst) from Windows users, sharing tales with each other, in a Mac forum, about the flip side of the coin. Preferably with facts, humor, or other methods than name-calling. MacMinute seems pretty good by that measure--better than most of the Internet in fact!

d) It's easy to skip any of those topics anyway. Read only the topics that meet what you are seeking from the forum.

e) Tales of switchers (like this thread) are more pro-Mac topics than they are anti-Windows. They can easily shift into anti-Windows territory of course. But switching is a current phenomenon, sometimes an interesting one, and certainly a relevant one to the Mac platform. It seems completely appropriate for a Mac forum.

f) The term "bashing" can be used in many ways. In my post I used it broadly in reference to ANY criticism, but true mindless bashing I cannot and will not justify. (And in my experience, true mindless bashing tends to be from Windows users more often than Mac users.) Gleeful posting of news, however, is not mindless bashing out of nowhere. I consider that fair game. I can also understand people not liking the "style" of that and avoiding such threads.

g) MacCentral's membership problems came from the gradual shutting down of MacCentral. Some people do hang out here though.

nagr[color:red]omme

I require stroyent!
TeamMacOSX.com | MacClan.net

MCF was destined to be around a looong time... until MW decided to pull the plug.

I also see it as funny that MM members would quite often tsk tsk behaviours over at MCF... but in light of all the "confessions" in the Lounge recently, I can see that it truly wasn't any different here. Heck.. after you get rid of ALL the sock puppets in here.. there's only 14 members left.

[image][/image]

Aw c'mon, don't exaggerate. Without the puppets there must be at least 16 or 17 people!

[color:red] [color:orange] [color:yellow] [color:green] [color:blue] [color:purple]

Anyway he was a very young PC genius but he love to bash Mac people in our own home "forum" soooo maybe thats why you felt that way but keep in mind we were being antagonized in our own room so to speak. His message to me was that the only reason he was in the forum was to teach us Mac Zealots the PCs were far superior <-- eeerrr okay but please leave out the bashing.

Personally;
I always hated the Mac Zealot" mantra, sure we love our platform - but when it comes to extremist,, PC weenies are way over the top and makes us zealots look like sheep in comparison.

true story;
When I bought my first computer ever,, it was a Mac back in the 030 days. Back then I did not know that there was even different kinds of operating systems. Sure there were Packard Bells and Performas but I just though they were the same thing just different manufacturers and different models - Long story short,, I met this man back then, he was in his 50s very professional looking,, I introduced myself and said I understand you work in the computer industry,, he said yes he was in the "IT" side of the industry. I said great, I just bought a computer a few weeks ago. He asked what kind and I said a Mac <-- His face then turned red with anger clinched his fist and was visibly shaking,, then said Mac People are Stupid. I though this guy was going to slug me right there.

Anyway PC people can be down right violent - were as Mac Zealots are just kool-aid drinking cultist.

IMO

It seems that as Apple became more successful, we heard less and less from him. I have to admit, I had more fun responding to his posts than anything else at Maccentral. On one hand the Mac fanboys didn't have a very good understanding of the Windows side. The problem was, our red-headed friend would respond with replies that were even more ridiculous in favor Microsoft. Sigh..., it gets boring without a troll to beat on.
