I always suspected you knew who the Mod was Lea, which is why I never humored you when you were "surmising" who the Mod might be. I figured then you were just covering for yourself or somebody else. Well, no harm done though.

We are STILL what we repeatedly do. -Aristotle

Yep, I never suspected you, John R/OSXAddict, were the Mod. I even started wondering about Poly because he has been conspicuously absent during all these posts.
I am fairly certain I was the most vocal member against a Mod with a "dual identity" and I made several posts to that effect. But you went on to be a very fair, largely inconspicuous presence, and my doubts vanished.

I still think the "sock outing" was a terrible idea, but once the ball was rolling it happened, and we weathered it. I knew from the first couple of posts that the moderator was John. Sounded just like him. But I think he tried to mask it by using the Queen's english. Didn't even have to check my IP tracking which would have been easy since his day job domain name was a cinch to link up to him.

To John, I apologize for going red line jackass when you deleted religious posts from the political forum when you first started moderating. You had a steep learning curve with the moderation job and did very well with only that misstep.

The sock puppet outing job you did was masterful. With humor and grace you pulled the rug out from under the liars and frauds. It was like retaking Psychology 101 realizing that there were people who had sock puppets that raged and screamed at a sock puppet on their other hand. It can never be calculated all the ill will generated by them and the newbies who stuck their toe in the MacMinute water only to have it bitten off because everyone of course thought them a sock puppet but your outing put an end to it. Too bad we only had a short time to enjoy the sock puppet free MacMinute. It is amazing what a difference it made. For people who are not going to MacCentral Cafe because politics might be spoken I wish you would check out the last year's posts in the political forum here. Not one person has been called a name. It is wall to wall intelligent conversation. Honest.

If Soultomy had only one rule at the new MacCentral Cafe I hope it would be that sock puppets should not be tolerated. Someone makes one for fun and they should be told it just is not a good idea no matter how much fun it seems. Mean sock puppets should be banished. Even the fun ones can cut the heart of trust out of any good forum. We will never know how good MacMinute could have been. The longest conversation I had with Stan was the problem of sock puppets and how much they totally sucked. Stan was much more forgiving than I would have been. But I'm head jackass.

Thanks for saying that. It's weird how posting can "sound" like someone. I wonder if Mikesellers and DLC think I sound the same now after meeting them.

I know that from now on I'll "hear" them when they post, which is different than what I had in my head before.

Yeah, I had a steep learning curve since I had no experience nor any type of training or anything. I don't like having to use too many smilies and winkies, but I rarely mean anything in a malicious way and that's the only way to diffuse a comment that could be misinterpreted. Naked words on a screen can appear mean or hateful when they're absolutely not. I thought so too, except it felt decidedly one sided.

Should have figured I already had a strike against me
once I called John "the Forum Nanny" when he'd throw
a hissy every time someone posted in what John decided
was "The WRONG Forum" It hit the fan after he shut down
the discussion I was trying to initiate about my best friend.

Funny thing was, I was the one defending the Mod's decisions
when other people were railing against him/her. ...Go Figure....

[color:green]"...or am I a butterfly that's dreaming she's a woman?"
Sorry, just saw this one. Nope, it was me. Alex played along with me.

As for changing it back, I had gotten a note from Stan.

[color:white]I'm also known as OSXaddict
John! Well no wonder you pinged me a few times as to why I wasn't around. Why didn't you just say so (that you were moderator)? So, finally, here's the reasons.

Well, things did get rather nasty here for a while and when a fine gentleman like Yoyo couldn't take it any longer, neither could I.

Turns out the Café was kind of a distraction from actually getting things done too, so it was kind of kicking a bad habit. Nothing personal in that regard. I just knew I didn't want to get back into it even when I did see in one of my every-few-months lurking that folks like Yoyo had returned.

I definitely popped back in to give condolences when the news of Stan's passing was posted on daringfireball.net.

What had originally brought me to the Café ages and ages ago was mac support in here. It was a great high-signal to noise place to get good mac advice (at the time). I then got into the social aspect of it.

Since then I've rarely found people that know more about Macs than I do (I'm often teaching the Java engineers where I work all the hidden tricks of the platform). So I didn't need to come here for that anymore. As far as an online social community, the ComedySportz forums (private) had really become much more active internationally and that was a community much closer to me both in cyberspace and meatspace. On top of that, family took a lot of time and so did work.

Now I also work for a company where a lot of time is willingly given. It's a company where when they decide to hire you they ask, "desktop or laptop? windows or mac? hoppy beer or stout?" Our primary product is social collaboration software: Clearspace. It's the stuff that powers the forums at Macworld. Yup that one. Not that I spend any time there either. I did meet the guy that customized the templates for it at An Event Apart last year in San Francisco. I digress. Anyway, between the constant blogging, forums and collaboration going on in that company, and ComedySportz forums, I figured I'd stick to getting at least a few hours of sleep a night. ;)

Kind of an odd feeling, even with me not participating in the last few years to see MM and MMcafé go bye-bye. I won't even have a place to lurk anymore.

Well, Pete, you know my ICQ/.Mac id. Where I work the network is wide open now (in contrast to being locked down to nearly nothing at all for two years at a health organization) and my IM is always on during biz hours.

Others can find me. There's not too many folks worldwide with Lascurettes as a surname running around.

EDIT PS: and the company I work for also makes the piece of forum software that powers the discussions in a certain fruity company's support area. I just can't say who. But it was pretty cool to work on that as one of my first jobs at my company.

I'd say I'm sorry my taking off led to your taking off too . . . except that you've clearly done yourself proud. Me, on the other hand . . . like Richard II says just before he's murdered, "I've wasted time, and now doth time waste me."

[color:red] [color:orange] [color:yellow] [color:green] [color:blue] [color:purple]

wow! Thanks for that post there, Squareman! Good to see you back, but I totally understand about getting away from here.

I was wondering if my emails were getting through. Well, now that I know why you left, I won't be bothering you any more. Sounds like you are busy busy busy, which isn't always a bad thing.

[color:white]I'm also the Moderator here

my photos
