Went to the Red Sox game last night with my son and the first batter was Jacoby Ellsbury. He turned on a fast ball too quickly maybe the third pitch of the game and sent a low screamer hooking foul. I couldn't get both hands up so after it hit me in my outstretched hand it bounced nicely to someone seated four down from me. My hand is still a little numb. Better seats two weeks ago I brought my mitt and of course saw no foul balls.

Red Sox won 7-6 to sweep the day night double header. Fun game from third pitch to last. I had to console myself with finding my Bill Buckner foul ball that was the last time I caught one. With over 37,000 folks it is a rare event to grab it cleanly. (The Bucker ball was missed too but I recovered it from under the seats.)

of course the Bill Buckner ball was missed.

i always felt dorky taking my mitt to the game, but you've helped me get over that feeling knowing that it's just the way to do it if you want the prize.

--
[color:red] Kansas Jayhawks -- 2008 National Champions
My son and his GF were there also. I hope they were polite. They were in on rain checks from Friday's washout, up in SEC 23.

The Bill of Rights doesn't grant us our rights, it merely enumerates them.

We were all rainchecks from the Friday rainout. The only way I get to go so often is the unplanned event. I can always make a game if someone else cannot. These were expensive birthday tickets for a niece who could not make the reschedule.

Section 23 is behind home plate on the third base edge of the screen. There were more than a few foul balls that rolled up there and off the edge, maybe they were luckier than me. I was even with third base.

Only bummer was Manny did not play in the night game. I wish he would get this home run 499 and 500 over with.

It only took one spectacular play by Jacoby Ellsbury in Center Field for Lester to throw his first complete game which happened to be a no hitter.

The last no hitter thrown in the majors, another youngeter Clay Bucholz last year.

Another record, that makes Jason Varitek as the catcher with the most caught no hitters
Hideki Nomo 2001
Derek Lowe 2002
Clay Bucholz 2007
Jon Lester 2008

An amazing, slightly irritating side effect of the Sox 21st century performance:

I have a few Sox shirts that are older than Mike Lowell. I have a new authentic Majestic "home' dugout jacket. And, I have a well worn very large navy sweat shirt with red letters and red socks across the front. Nowadays, when I wear any of this stuff around the neighborhood, I get an awful lot of attention: "Oh, Red Sox fan, eh?" Nobody noticed in 2003, or 1993 for that matter. They then usually follow up with something like "Well, I'm a yankees fan, but..." to which I usually reply with my condolences, and sympathy for their Mr. Girardi.

A few weeks ago I put in for a transfer from DC to the KC office. I wonder if this series will have any effect on my paperwork....

And, I am willing to go as high as fifty dollars a seat for tickets to the Aug 23rd game. Monster seating would be ok. So would something in the neighborhood of, say, Sec 42, row 37, seat 21.

The Bill of Rights doesn't grant us our rights, it merely enumerates them.

50 bucks for the August 23rd game? Since Neil Diamond will be on stage in the middle of the field section 42 is still available but the price tag is $204 a seat.

Me, I like Sweet Caroline sans Neil, singing it as loud as I can dancing in the middle of the eighth. I try and embarrass an offspring or sibling by acting out the "touching me, touching you."

Fun Fact: Saturday's game they played it with the words on the megascreen just like they have been doing since 2002. Except half way through they switch to an advert for the Neil Diamond concert at Fenway. And even though there are a lot of people in that park that have sung that song 64 times a year practically no one knew the words once they were gone. (Including me.) So we sang blah blah blah on the hard parts getting to the "Sweet Caroline, bwah bwah bwah"

Second fun fact: Last year I am yacking with a group behind me who have never been to Fenway Park and they are Yankee fans. Turns out the cute one in the middle is named Caroline. (I find this out in the third inning.) I ask her in the top of the 8th how she can remain a Yankees fan after 36,000 Red Sox Fans in Fenway Park serenade her? She of course did not have a clue what I was talking about. I mentioned it a couple of more times but did not tell her about Sweet Caroline.

Then as the song started and we stood up to sing I yelled out pointing at her, "She's Caroline!!" and by the end of the song the section was turned toward her singing the song. She turned red a bit then got into it and was practically crying at the end (I was miming out the "touching me touching you with her"). She is now a Red Sox fan and her boyfriend bought me a beer.

[edit]pronoun change

Edited by polymerase on 05/20/08 03:15 PM (server time).
