Business Week has a great story. What I found interesting is not just the article itself but the reader comments. The vast majority are not the usual fanboy stuff. These are real world switchers, many of them recent in the last year.

Interesting article, especially the comments as you mention. They're finding out what we knew all along.

There is some tough competition ahead for the desktop/laptop space. I've completely switched an old PC (an old athlon xp box) to Ubuntu at home, and it runs smoother and faster than this G5 despite literally being 1/2 the machine spec wise. I like it so much I put it on the new PC too. You can bet it'll be on an iMac if I get one this year. Plus every upgrade is free, not $149 ;)

The only reason I don't run it 100% is that there are a few programs (mainly games) that don't run just right in WINE. There are some things it does that I wish OS X did, or did as well, like the 3D desktop, or compositing effects which are honestly much smoother in Ubuntu.

My next project is getting 10.5 running on the new PC. Actually all I have to do is get another HD and install it. Then I'll be one happy camper :)

Hey I'm an F'n Jerk!®

I see you have an old G5 like myself. They don't compare to the new Intel breed, I hate to say. I was astounded when I got to use a new iMac. I hated to come home to my 1.8 GHz DP machine.

You can't beat the price of Linux. I see both it an OSX making huge inroads. Both offer something compelling besides Windows. Microsoft is desperately trying to be something other than a software company to the detriment of their OS R&D. Vista is the best thing that ever happened to Apple.
