However, in the same Consumer Reports article, Apple has sunk to the BOTTOM of the 8 major brands in terms of reliability/repair frequency for laptops. Now, the entire span from worst to best is BARELY within the limits of statistical significance--so it really only tells us that Compaq and Lenovo are slightly more reliable than Apple and the others are unknown. But in any case Apple used to be on top and at the moment they are not.<br><br>Even scarier: the BEST manufacturers have a 1-in-5 laptop failure rate! (That's a 20% failure rate, compared to Apple's at 23%, with anything under 3% not being meaningful for a sample of this size.)<br><br>Apple's still on top for desktop reliability though, by a wide margin: they have a 12% failure rate.<br><br>The second-best desktops have a 17% failure rate (wow, almost laptop territory!) Gateway and eMachines, predicatable, bring up the rear with 19% and 20% desktop failure rates. (I've lost a game of eMachines Roulette myself--and will not be playing again!)<br><br>Specific models aren't broken down, so take these numbers as a specific guide.<br><br>Of course, as usual, Consumer Reports chickens out of offering ANY guidance on choosing between Mac and Windows (and therefore doesn't mention the option having both in one). They also state categorically that the MacBook Air can NOT replace your current laptop. Even though, for most of their audience (people who use Consumer Reports for technology advice!) a MacBook Air could probably do exactly that.<br><br>(I'm a high-end user, and MacBook Air absolutely replaced my "pro" laptop.
