Is there a scanner that works directly in OS X? I don't want to use classic and haven't even bought a scanner yet for my new flat panel iMac. I really could use one now.

Yes...the Epson Perfection 1650 (and 1640, plus some others.) Here is a post from Macintouch this morning. I've downloaded and used these drivers, and they work well:
Date: Mon, 25 Mar 2002 09:15:33 -0700
From: David Diokno
Subject: OSX Epson Scanner Support

Last week I was doing a search of Apple's website under support for Drivers for my Epson Perfection 610 scanner and low and behold I came upon this link to developer drivers for most of Epson's current scanners. Therewas the usual disclaimer, and also a note about work in progress for integration into iPhoto. I just went back today to try and find it using a search and could no longer find it when I used the Epson keywords... But here is the direct link to Epson's developer site. The driver actually works pretty well under OS X 10.1.3 I know a lot of people will be excited to be able to use their Epson Scanners under X again. They are still under development, so people must take the usual precautions, but they work beautifully for me. There are two applications,

1. I have an AGFA SnapScan 1212u, not the flashiest of scanners in the world, but functional, and the X drivers work beautifully.

And that's true too.--Shakespeare, King Lear

VueScan supports a ton of scanners under Mac OS X, including my FierWire UMAX Astra 6450 (which otherwise wouldn't work, as UMAX has yet to release drivers). Sure, it doesn't integrate nicely into Photoshop, but it produces great scans and has all the options anyone could ever need. Check it out.

Most all epson scanners are supported in OSX now... although some require a "hack" to use. You can download the Cannon ScanGear app/drivers and install it, and surprisingly enough, it installs TWAIN 5 which is supported by Photoshop 7 and other apps. Or, Epson has beta "stand-alone" scanner modules which work just fine.

As the others have said, VueScan is also a great product that does more than the actual scanner drivers do and it's is relatively inexpensive.

[color:red]semicolon dash parenthesis

AGFA no longer sells scanners in North America. Their line is rebadged as MicroTek. I have a Microtek Scanmaker 8700 (which is nearly identical to the AGFA DuoScan) that works in OSX using the USB port if you use Microtek's software ScanWizard Pro 7.0. It works with both firewire and USB if you use VueScanX. In my opinion VueScanX is the best $40 you will ever spend if you are doing alot of scanning where color accuracy really matters.
