The trouble I ran into with using my WD MyBook as my TM drive is that whenever I logged out and then slept the Mac, when I woke it up again I got an error message telling me that the WD was read only. I would have to unmount the WD by ejecting it, then turn it off, and then turn it on again for TM to work. Without an on/off button, that would get old really fast.

Edit:

thread is here
Edited by dreed2 on 03/20/08 09:20 PM (server time).

Hmm.. that's weird. O hope it doesn't happen to me. Of course I never log out though.

If it doesn't work with TM .. I'll still have a 500 GB drive.

A quick look at Apples discussions shows it's a well known issue... since last Oct with the GM version. It happens with other brand names too.

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6277068&#6277068

I read that thread and it never ceases to amaze me how the first thing many people suggest is to erase and reformat.

I always log out when I'm done using the Mac and sleep it, so I kept the WD next to my monitor and got in the habit of ejecting it and turning it off before logging out. That solved the problem for me. Restarting the Mac also gets TM working again, but it's easier to restart the external drive.

Anyways, your new drive will be fine, since you don't log out. Maybe the newest TM update fixed the issue.

Do you use a common computer, one that you don't want others to see your files? I can't imagine going through the PITA of waking from sleep AND logging in every time I want to do something. I'm annoyed as hell by the 3-4 second wait for my moniter to wake up.
