In reply to:

Technology marches onward and upward whether we approve or like it. Poly is right, physical media such as CD/DVD will one day be right up there with 8 track players.

Problem is, right now the internet is worse than those 8 track players. When you talk about physical media, unless there is a gee whiz development, there simply isn't enough bandwidth to abandon physical media and there might not be anytime in the next 30 years. Are you willing to fork over $300 a month for internet access of those kinds of speeds that will be required? Bandwidth isn't free it must be built, and if it's not paid for by subscribers it must be subsidized through taxes.

Hell, until two weeks ago I had to settle for dial-up. There are millions of people in this country (hell all over the world) that not only have to settle for dialup still, but at speeds equivalent to a 14.4 modem or slower! Until everyone can download gigs of data per second, what you speak of isn't going to materialize. Sure, I can download full length HD movies.. but I also can drive to the store and back faster.

Hey I'm an F'n Jerk!®

"The Cube was in short supply and selling like hotcakes for a few months..."

I was just reading through this thread and wondering when someone would consider another possibility for Apple being short on supply. Not to be a "nay sayer", but... like the iPhone, I'm sure there is some pent up demand for such a product. However, this seems to be more of a niche product to me. I'm sure Apple knows this. Apple has to make a fair guess at how much of any given product to produce. Until I see sales figures which would indicate this is really a hot product, I'm more inclined to believe it's a niche product that is initially selling better than Apple's expectations. Another possibility is that Apple is encountering supply shortages from one of it's vendors, etc. I hope I'm wrong on this. Remember, I even doubted Apple was going to revisit the sub-notebook class at all.

Whoops! If you think I was comparing the air to the iMac, I'm sorry I misled you. Our bet is based on:

The MBA is going to outsell the MBP15 inch.

$20 smacker-roos!

When you say the MBA will be a very big success, you and I may just disagree what 'big' is.

I'm saying it is a very 'specialty' item that will not appeal to, or be bought by the multitudes of folk who bought the MBP15 inch or any other book.

Now, now, don't go tying me down to specifics. I know I got out of the 15inch category there again.

Sometimes you're the windshield, sometimes you're the bug.

Gave me a big laugh. But, my bet may prove me the bug this time. However, my life doesn't hang on it nor will I claim any bragging rights if I win the bet. It's all in fun.

[color:blue]Poly is right, physical media such as CD/DVD will one day be right up there with 8 track players. The generations to come will look at those round disks and laugh the same way I giggle at floppy disks right now.

I make my living moving what previous generations have created into formats which hopefully someone in the future will still be able to access and enjoy. The media types will change, no doubt, but not people's desire to own their lives in some tangible form.

One can only hope that these media will be half as durable as the analog ones from yore. Because the alternative - having all one's media reside in some pie in the sky server - means that sooner or later, willfully or by accident, someone is going to pull the wrong switch, and poof!

I am so jealous! My iPhone elicits the same response, so I'm not THAT jealous, but my iBook is getting long in the tooth and I'm seriously NOT looking at MBA. Nope, I'm not even being tempted. No, nada, I can't (until I finish college).
