In reply to:

You're comparing the Cube to the MBA?

I'm not comparing anything. I simply said that the Cube sold well too for a while. We obviously won't know how popular the MBA will be long term for a year or so.

In reply to:

FMITGA

OK, I know that's some kind of "Internet shorthand" but I honestly don't know what it means.

In reply to:

One of us will be eating crow when we revisit this thread.

It won't be me, because I've never said (that I recall) that the MBA WON'T sell well. I've said in the past that I don't know that I agree there is a huge market for the thing. We won't know how well it sells for another year or so - after the "cool & new" factor wears off.

In reply to:

Should I bring up your "iPods neat but way way too expensive they won't sell" threads?

You can if you want, if it makes you feel better. I also said the Cube won't sell well - care to bring those threads up? I also said Adobe InDesign would eventually kill Quark as the market leader - despite most everyone threatening to have me sent to the white room with padded walls for saying such a thing. Well, I don't see anyone eating any crow now.

Sometimes you're the windshield, sometimes you're the bug.

For the record, I never said the MBA was crap. I just think that it's incredibly overpriced for what you get. It's certainly cool looking, and the form factor is beautiful - but so are a lot of products that functionally are a failure.

FMITGA is a meaningless acronym I use to mark internet pages so I can then find them later by just searching FMITGA. I need to start using another one because it actually does mean something. Adam Sandler made a goat say it.

XYZZYFMITGA

For the record, I never said the MBA was crap.

Me either.

I think it is innovative and has a lot of WOW factor. I just don't think it is going to make a gigantic splash like a lot of other Apple products have had such loarge success!

If you're gonna compare a MBA to something such as an iMac then of course you are going to be right. There aren't now nor will there ever be crowds clamoring at Apple's doors to get an MBA. It will, however, be a very big success.

Tthe networks are beginning to smoke ... believe it or not .. the internet is emitting as much CO2 now as all civilian air travel, and with so many business models based on limitless bandwidth, the providers will demand a slice of the cake as well.

Those flat-rate plans will disappear again, mark my words, and the ecologically and economically much sounder media will survive.
Much better for the environment anyway, to pass on your movie-DVD than for everyone to download it.

Besides, do you really want your watching reading and listening habits be known to all the sales bots in the internet?

Sorry, Eck. The writing has been on the wall for some time and it has nothing to do with Apple. They just happen to be smart enough to realize and capitalize on it. Technology marches onward and upward whether we approve or like it. Poly is right, physical media such as CD/DVD will one day be right up there with 8 track players. The generations to come will look at those round disks and laugh the same way I giggle at floppy disks right now.

Then they will know what I like and tailor adverts and specials to me. Why is this any different then in the 50s the shoe salesman knowing my mother and her kids and knowing what kind of shoe she liked the last time she came in?

Why is that somehow scary?

Seven laptops, don't watch movies or TV and read analog books ...... nope, my good man, you just disqualified yourself completely. (Heck, Jobs in his Times interview stated that Americans don't read anymore, and here you go, proving him wrong..... nope, that won't work.

Blu-Ray will be a high-end video and super storage product, since affordable 100GB disks are on the horizon.
Cheaper than solid state, more robust than hard drives, easy to ship ..... I will go through oodles of them in my work.

Also, many civilians have switched to laptops because they rather do their surfing and letter writing on their sofas instead of being tied to a desk. In my own immediate family - roughly 25 people ranging in age from 13 to 84 - there are at least 15 laptops to perhaps 3-4 desktops. (Not quite true, I have two workhorse PCs, and my younger brother, who is chief editor at one of Germany's leading computer magazines (Heise Verlag, Hannover) runs a few Linux boxes to control his model trains. wink )

I still think the MBA is a nifty second machine. ;)
