From Macfixit:
Troubleshooting iCal 1.0.1: Unexpected Quits; Date displayed in icon; more

Unexpected Quits Several readers report unexpected quit messages when moving from iCal 1.0 to 1.0.1. One effective solution is to completely delete iCal, and all of its associated files, before installing the new release. Among the files that need to be deleted:

* com.apple.iCal in Users/Library/Caches
* com.apple.iCal.alarmsCache.plist in Users/Library/Preferences
* com.apple.iCal.plist in Users/Library/Preferences
* com.apple.iCal.sources.plilst in Users/Library/Preferences
* iCal.pkg in main drive/Library/Receipts
* The app itself.

After deleting all of these files, you will be presented with a button marked "Install" rather than "Upgrade" in the Software Update component.

Date displayed in icon We previously reported a flaw in the original release of iCal that could cause its icon in the dock to remain stuck on a previous date, or display the default "July 17th" marking. Joe Kehoskie notes that Apple has worked around, but not solved the problem in iCal 1.0.1:

"In the initial release, closing iCal also quit the application. In 1.0.1, closing iCal simply closes the application window while keeping the application launched, and iCal's dock automatically updates itself with the current date. (It just did so for me at midnight.) While users still need to launch iCal initially, there's no need to relaunch daily to get the current date displayed."

Time zone problems, solution Switching the selected time zone in the "Date and Time" pane of System Preferences can avoid some of the appointment time corruption issues reported in iCal 1.0.1. Byron Harris writes:

"I noticed that everyone said being west of California suffered the problems of appointments and dates showing improperly. On a hunch I went to my Date and Time control panel and switched my time zone from Hawaiian Standard Time to Mountain Standard Time. Sure enough, iCal now displays all appointments and dates correctly."

Hadn't had any of the documented probs w/1.0.1, but what was a little odd was that I had to d/l and install the .02 upgrade twice. First time, it still said 1.0.1 (in "About iCal, and "get Info") — even after optimizing. After the 2nd install, it ID'd as .02. Go figure...

I guess we're lucky it's still free. Or we would have been charged twice!

I thought MacUpdate was late posting the 1st update... then I noticed that Versiontracker didn't have it yet, so I went back to MU to read the description. The date in the icon problem still continues for me, but I'm going to try deleting everything first this time.

Visit Me At My .Mac Site

The date still gives you problems even after upgrading to 1.0.2?

What exactly should we hold on to (data files) for iCal if we were to delete the app and the prefs, and start over?

[color:red]Hold on, it's time for a...
I deleted every sign of iCal off my system, then installed this newest version... it still says Jul 17 whenever the app isn't open.

Visit Me At My .Mac Site

Well, I just quit out of iCal and it stayed on today's date- I didn't do a clean install, either.

It DID go back to the 17th date when I logged out and the dock popped up, though- but then again I have iCal in my Login items so it immediately launched and went to the correct date again...

[color:red]Hold on, it's time for a...
