I'm thinking about buying a new Macbook Pro.<br>There's no difference in price between a normal screen or a glossy screen.<br>Which should I order? What's the difference?<br><br>

You couldn't find a more contentious question in which people will write reams about absolutely no difference.<br><br>Let me start.<br><br>The matte screen is the addition of a layer. A layer that diffuses light. The glossy screen is the lack of this layer. If you want to see more stuff on your screen with less junk in between showing richer blacks get the glossy screen.<br>If you are afraid of change and want the same screen that Apple has made for years. Get the matte screen. The only drawback of the glossy is that on a sunny day in the backyard deck you might have to move all of about 5 degrees off of the sun angle so you are not looking at a nice mirror picture of yourself. With the matte you will not be able to read the screen from any angle. I have a glossy screen on a 15MBP and love it indoors and out. My wife has the same 15MBP and she loves it. I really can't tell the difference except that the glossy looks cool and the blacks are definitely blacker.<br><br><br><br><br><br>

I have a glossy screen on my new MacBook and definitely do NOT prefer it. The screen on my old PowerBook was better.<br><br>The issue is that there is a lot vertical brightness and saturation shift. When working with photos I am always adjusting the screen angle to get a good view. It makes matters worse if you are using it on your lap where you can't hold it steady all the time. If you are doing any graphical or photo work, you'll prefer the matte screen.<br><br>

Hi, Ron.<br><br>I have a MacBook Pro at work with glossy screen, and my son's MacBook is glossy. I love them. Occasionally, you can see reflections. However, the MacBook and MBP are portable, right? Just like a camera. If the angle isn't right, you can change it. My MBP at work sits on a table to my left. There is a window behind and to my right. No problem.<br><br>If you are near an Apple store, or know someone who has a glossy screen, I suggest you go look. There's hardly a more harshly lit environment, save outdoor sunlight, than the lights in an Apple store.<br><br>PS - I never work outside in the sun. It's a matter of personal taste, it's best to just visit an apple store and see them both side by side.. Although I can see what people like about glossy screens (and photo prints for that matter), I prefer matte screens (and photo prints).<br><br>That said, the glossy screens DO have an anti-glare coating of some kind. You're not getting a pure glassy reflection. Lights behind you reflect--but not at the full brightness that a glossy surface would show without any anti-glare.<br><br>Look in person and compare--and keep in mind that a brightly-lit store may be different from the places you'll use the machine. I'll agree with Poly and a few others. I have a 15" MacBookPro with glossy screen and I love it. I'm constantly working on it outside in the Phoenix sun (which is about the worst possible "sunlight" scenario you could find) and it doesn't bother me a bit. Because the contrast is better, it overcomes any reflection issues.<br><br>And as stated by someone else already, with glossy, you can see the screen from different angles, unlike matte screen where you really have to be sitting right in front of the screen to see the full color spectrum, etc.<br><br>Plus, I just feel like it's easier to clean.<br><br>
