This in from Salon.com:

In reply to:

Microsoft Corp. on Monday released a patch to correct six new security vulnerabilities in its Internet Explorer browser, including one that could let a hacker run any program on a victim's computer.[

The problem doesn't seem to involve the Mac versions of IE. But it is so comforting to know that Uncle Bill is now concerned with security, isn't it?

And that's true too.--Shakespeare, King Lear

but what's really frustrating is when you're IT support staff at your job doesn't tell you about security patches, because they're too lazy to make sure the entire company has them installed... either they're lazy, or the upper management has the emphasis on the wrong programs.... argh.... can't wait till my new Mac gets delivered... i'm so tired on Windows.

Whenever I hear an argument about using a Mac and why I would want to use such a stupid computer, I point to the facts that I don't have to worry when I open an email and I don't have to fear that my computer's and network's security will be compromised by JavaScript.

Not to mention that Mac users rarely have to worry about the IE problems, because unless it's in the rendering engine, the codebases for the two projects are completely isolated - it's the one based on Win32 that has so many issues. And when the occasional cross platform "feature bug" does pop up, that's what Opera, iCab, Netscape, OmniWeb, etc. are for. :)

As someone whose thousands of hats include I.T. guy, let's distinguish between Mac I.T., Linux/*nix I.T., and Windows I.T. guys. :)

I'll tell you, the Windows I.T. guy is a difficult kind of guy to put one's finger on. On the one hand, among friends, they will discuss how much Windows sucks. On the other, in the office, they will defend themselves and their product choices for hours on end as if they themselves had been insulted by any implication of instability.

[I have found out that sometimes, but not universally, it's because the IT guys have reseller accounts where they make money off selling licenses and then again for installing them...hmm...]

I'm lucky enough to have a Mac at my workstation, and it's sparked a number of discussions started by our IT guy about using such a minority platform, Apple being dead, and why someone would want to run so few services. While I will say I have never "lost" any such discussion with him, most often the discussions are sort of like unanesthetized lobotomies...

I'm about to add a Windows box to my desktop at work (my third computer :P), and I figure the only way to keep it secure is to do it myself. But at least then I'll have specific arguments with my IT guy :)

I just came from a meeting with the head of our IT services. What a total loss that woman is!

For windows users, though, the possibility of keeping your machine your own seems to be getting slimmer and slimmer. She was describing the migration to windows 2000 that she has planned, and the ease with which apps can be automatically put on people's computers from a centralized location. I thank heaven that I use a Mac!!

And that's true too.--Shakespeare, King Lear
