I used CCC a looong time ago and it was great. I haven't used it in forever though and remember hearing a lot of posters saying they preferred Super Duper. After reviewing them both and seeing they both do bootable clones... I can only surmise that SD was preferred due to ...? better back up capabilities?
I downloaded CCC for free as opposed to to SD @ $28. I figure with TM why would I need anything more than CCC?

Any thoughts?

You can use all the third party software you want - keeps them dev'ing, but DU does the same thing with its Restore function. I've used it - it works making a bootable backup.

I've used both and both are great. Super Duper doesn't require a payment ...you just don't get some of the advanced features.

The new CCC looks sweet. I'd probably go for it if I absolutely had to choose one.

zweisoft
I agree with your conclusion that there's no need to pay for a bootable backup utility nowadays, so the free CCC should be more than you'll ever need.

I gave up worrying about bootable backups a couple of years ago. I don't really know why, but I think it happened after I went completely OS X and got a large external drive. Ever since then, all the stuff I really need is neatly located in my Home folder, rather than the way OS 9 had things all over the place. I started backing up only my Home folder, instead of the whole ball of wax about that time. My OS and applications are on CD's or DVD's, so I could easily reinstall them. Now we have Time Machine, too.

I see your point. 20 minutes is a good deal. I'd really hate to have to reinstall all my apps and the updates, etc. It would take the better part of a day.

I started using Super Duper because it was so much faster than CCC. However, CCC 3.0.1 is acceptably fast, and it is Leopard compatible. I find it easier to use when making compressed (.dmg) disk images and to select specific files for backup. Mike Bombich is requesting a $10 donation, but he certainly deserves it for his dedicated development of this tool. AFAIK, Super Duper does not back up properly when running from Leopard. I tried it once and the backup was not successful. However, I have backed up a Leopard disk several times with Super Duper while started from 10.4.11.

Who serves his fellows, is of his fellows greatest - Chingachgook (by legend)

Scout

i've been using Synk for some time. the developer gave it to me for an education price of $5 (i think -- it was really cheap, though). he had a Leopard version when Leopard came out and he's active in his discussion forums, etc. i back up twice a week and it's smooth as buttuh.

http://www.decimus.net/

In reply to:

All versions of Synk 6 feature ZeroScan, the revolutionary new technology that makes updating your backups blazingly fast.
