At work, we have a shared network of assorted Macs running 10.3.x and 10.4.x. I personally upgraded my MacBook Pro to 10.5, but after the upgrade I cannot read any Arabic file names on the shared Macs (all garbled characters). Everything was ok before I upgraded (directory listing, search, copy, ...)

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Waleed

---
http://stock.fo2oz.com
Maybe your font caches are corrupt.

On startup if you hold the Shift key down until you see the Apple it should boot into Safe Boot mode. It runs Disk Utility in the background, turns of all non-Apple stuff, and startup items, and clears the font caches. You'll want to restart it again after it starts up. You'll know you're in Safe Boot as one screen will say so in red.

That's what it used to do in Tiger, I think the same is done in Leopard.

You can also try running something like Font Finagler to clear font caches on the MB Pro.

Leopard Cache Cleaner does it too, and much more.

HTH

------> JD's Trivia game

------> MCF-MM Trivia game
On your network at home, are the other machines on 10.5, or earlier versions?

Maybe there is a font conflict, Font Book should let you turnoff all fonts and then automatically activate them as you need them.

I'm curious of the solution. It seems Apple did make some changes to the Persian version of the Arabic fonts from looking around. It also added support for Windows TTF Arabic fonts.

------> JD's Trivia game

------> MCF-MM Trivia game
I ran across this regarding Arabic fonts;

"Disabling the Microsoft Office Arial and Times New Roman fonts in the Font Book should clear up the disjointed letters issue in most applications although sometimes the issue is more complex.

After reviewing just how many fonts I use on a regular basis which total about 5, I decided to delete all of the fonts installed in my local user directory by Microsoft Office and reverted to the default Mac fonts that are located in my system folder and this also cleared up the disjointed letter issue."

------> JD's Trivia game

------> MCF-MM Trivia game

I really appreciate your help in this, Reboot..

The Mac I have at home is an eMac running 10.4.10.. But I found out that not all shared computers at work are Macs, some are windoze.. Something changed in 10.5 and I bet it's the ability to automatically detect and switch to different encodings..

We don't have any microsoft products at home and didn't even launch the trail ms-office, as I read it replaces fonts and possibly effect the way Arabic is displayed.

I found this in my searches, perhaps I can ask our IT guys to test it:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/filenameencodingrepairutility.html

---
http://stock.fo2oz.com
Edited by walzuhair on 11/15/07 00:32 AM (server time).

I noticed that "Geeza Pro", the Arabic font used by the system, has changed between Mac OS X 10.4.10 and 10.5.. I'm on my way out to work now, so I'll try and see if the old font can display Arabic correctly.. I doubt it, but I'll try..

---
http://stock.fo2oz.com
