A lot of factors affect indexing. If you're using the USB 1.1 of that AGP G4 it will be much slower than a G5's USB 2. Size of the drive, and amount and kind of files affect it too. Many small text files take a lot longer than a few images for example. If you pull it out before it finishes indexing it has to start from the beginning the next time.

As far as the Toast Converted Items folder, with the way video conversion works indexing would probably slow down the encoding process by constantly wanting to read the changed files. EyeTV does the same thing for the folder that it uses to store the programs it records.

Or maybe the drive is screwy and needs to be reformatted so indexing goes faster.

------> JD's Trivia game

------> MCF-MM Trivia game
Three observations. First, you can't exclude a thumb drive until Spotlight has finished indexing it. Then you can select it as a device that Spotlight should not index. However, as soon as you eject the drive, it disappears from the Privacy items. Finally, when you mount the thumb drive again, it will appear in the list of Privacy items and Spotlight will not index it any more.

   
