I'll bet that newer model with the extra .16 GHz really flies.

Old farts, the hidden caulk of civilization. Jim Atkinson

In reply to:

When was the last PPC? 2004? 2005?

????? They discontinued the Mini and laptops, G4's, and the G5 towers just a year ago, 2006. I doubt 10.6 will be PPC only. That would make a lot of only 2.5 to 3 year old machines out of the loop and a lot of mad people.

------> JD's Trivia game

------> MCF-MM Trivia game

Hope you're right. I can't see having to buy a new computer two years from now just to run the new OS.

   

Apple has historically supported all machines with a new OS for around 4-5 years, sometimes a little longer. My MDD 867 just made the cut, it was discontinued 4.5 years ago. The 733 Quicksilver isn't supported but the faster ones are, those are just over 5 years since they discontinued them. The previous G4 models are 6 years or more, not supported. System 9 and OS X were pretty much the same timeline.

Of course things can change, but the cycle is what they have done in the past. If you figure another 1.5 years for 10.6, plus the year and a month since the G5's and G4's I mentioned were discontinued, you're looking at only about 2.5 years, 3 if they make it another 2 year cycle on the OS. I doubt they'd drop support for hardware that quickly.

------> JD's Trivia game

------> MCF-MM Trivia game

In reply to:

I doubt 10.6 will be PPC only

Now that is something you can take to the bank!

I think you make a good point that they tend to support for a good five years out, but I think this is going to be a bit different for a couple reasons. Maintaining support for old, slower PPCs, while building a new OS for newer, faster PPCs is a whole lot easier (and far cheaper) than creating a new OS that must work flawlessly on two, completely different chipsets (Intel and PPC). A better comparison than looking at past cycles involving G3 to G4 to G5 might be to look at their length of OS support for 68K after the PPC transition.

Its way too early to even worry about, but they will drop support for a model when it becomes too much of a liability, either financially or development-wise. One thing we all know about Apple development is they are pretty quick to cut their losses and move on when technology changes.

Quadras from 1991 could run system 8.1, 1998. 8.5 came out in Oct '98, it was the first PPC only. 7 year cycle. OS 9 was about the same. 10.0 cut the cycle to about 5 years.

Oh hell, I just got "I doubt 10.6 will be PPC only". Dumbassİ

------> JD's Trivia game

------> MCF-MM Trivia game
