I am using a powerbook G4 with OS X 1.4. I have outlook express with Mac Mail. When I click the mail icon, I get a fetch error as my dial-up starts. After connecting to the mail, I click the error message and it disappears. The mail connection is ok. What is going wrong and how can I correct the situation.

If Mail is trying to get mail before your connection is established, then it can't fetch the mail and you get the fetch error. To fix that, try the following. Go to the Network System Pane and when it comes up, make sure that the "Show" menu has the Internal Modem showing. Then click on the PPP tab, and then click on the button towards the bottom of the pane that reads "PPP Options." When that window comes up, make sure that you have the "Connect Automatically When Needed" box checked.

Now, I've never used X on anything but a routed broadband connection, but I'm pretty sure that will do the trick.

edit: some day I'll learn to proofread before I post

Great wits are sure to madness near allied.--John Dryden, "Absalom and Achitophel"
Edited by yoyo52 on 12/22/02 11:57 PM (server time).

You may want to turn off the "auto-check when launched" button. By having it checked, it is starting the mail fetch process before you are fully connected. Connect to the net first, once you are connected, then click the "get mail" button manually.

Visit Me At My .Mac Site
