Is there a way to make a hard drive mount on the desktop when it won't normally?

I have 2 hard drives that won't mount. I borrowed my brother's cables that hook to a hard drive to do this but they don't show up. They spin up just fine, but nothing. Disk Utility and Disk Warrior doesn't see them.

BTW, these cables do work. I have 3 good hard drives that mounted just fine.

my beer blog

One is a SATA drive (no jumper settings needed) and the other is an IDE one. What should the jumpers be on that one?

my beer blog

IDE jumper settings are based on the manufacturer's specs - check their site. How are you attaching the SATA and/or IDE - to the same Mac? What Mac model?

- alec -

I'm attaching them via cables to USB. it's like having an external drive but no enclosure. This is to a Powermac G5. 4 drives work fine, mount and copied over files. 2 drives spin up but don't mount.

I put one jumper on the IDE drive to slave. No mounting. Changed it to Master and same thing.

The SATA drive doesn't have jumpers and the 4 other SATA drives didn't need anything different than what I'm trying now.

my beer blog

#1 - USB can be hit and miss, at the best of times - Firewire is MUCH better.

#2 - no enclosures? How are you attaching the ribbon cables?

#3 - sometimes setting incorrect jumpers on IDE drives screws up the chipset - should be Master.

- alec -

I haven't ever had any problems with USB devices. My printers have all been USB, the old card reader was USB, and the usb hub I had previously was no problem.

In fact, hooking up the other 4 hard drives via this cable and USB presented 0 problems.

In fact I think the firewire port on the rear of my G5 is going bad.

Yes, no enclosures. This is how it looks. It's not meant for permanent, but just to do what you need to do then disconnect it. My brother bought these cables for his iPod hard drive. I'm going to get a set now.

#1

Not sure if you can tell by the above picture, but there are 4 connectors there. 2 for SATA and 2 for IDE drives. I have the IDE drive hooked up. those then go to the USB port on my mac and the other cord goes to the power outlet in the wall. The one with the power cable has an on/off switch, which you can see in picture #2 below.

The one IDE hard drive that I have was the first one I hooked up. I had left the jumpers in the way they were when they were in my old powermac g4. Only when it didn't mount on my desktop did I remove the jumpers. So I don't think I screwed up the chipset.

my beer blog

I was implying USB can be problematic when attaching hard drives with boot volumes on them. No problems with most other devices.

That's a cool cable set up! If it offered Firewire connectivity, I'd be interested in something like that.

Can you try the offending drive(s) in a tower? I'm just a little hesitant about the cable solution.

- alec -

I don't have a mac with IDE cables and I'm reluctant to attempt to get one of the HD's out of the G5. Not very user friendly.

I don't know why 4 HD's mount up just fine with 10.4 installed on them but 2 won't.

my beer blog
