I've been playing Doom 3 for a day or so now and already I can't stand the keyboard/mouse combo to control my onscreen character. Can anyone recommend an alternative controller device?

I've heard it said that handheld controllers are useless in first-person shooters on a computer. Is that true?

TIA

M i c h a e l (OFI)

Thanks. I'd buy a joystick if I thought that would work with FPSs.

Playing Doom in near darkness is a terrifying feeling but it's exhilarating. I'm sending the Mac's video signal to my television which is awesome, but I'm forced to crane my neck because I'm tethered to the keyboard/mouse combo.

Also, I can't find my way around the keyboard sitting in the dark. Add to that the stress of trying to duck and dodge to avoid becoming soup and it can lead to a frustrating gaming experience.

My x360 has a wireless controller and it works flawlessly with FPSs and so I wonder what is the dealeo?

M i c h a e l (OFI)

For FPS games, mouse and keyboard is where it's at, sorry to say...

I've been playing that way for at least 10 years now - any other control scheme is just completely useless for me. Trying to position a crosshair over a target with a thumbstick is simply ridiculous compared to using a mouse, IMO...

For FPS games, mouse and keyboard is where it's at, sorry to say...

On the computer platform yes, but certainly not for consoles. I attribute that to the slow evolution of the computer gaming user-interface, which assigns a single action/option to each key, whereas the game controller with limited buttons, has made good use of on-screen menus. Sorta like the Mac GUI which used menus to distinguish itself from the DOS prompt.

After playing games for ten years using only a keyboard and mouse, It's easy to understand why you would use words like useless and ridiculous to describe the effectiveness of a hand-held controller for FPS games on the Mac/PC platform. The same could be said if you made inquiries about making good use of the keyboard/mouse on an x360.

The coordination it takes for you to move a crosshair around a screen using your hand and wrist, I can do with my thumb. There is no difference between the two devices as one sees it on the screen, however I'm sure I look a lot funnier than you do because I have this tendency to wave my arms wildly around in the air when I get really excited.

The problem I have with the keyboard is that, I can't reach all the keys from home ( is there a home? ) and once I lift my left hand off the keyboard I have to take my eyes off the screen and that's distracting. That's what makes the Nostromo gizmo a perfect companion for me. I can plant my left hand in the palm-rest and reach every option for Doom. without lifting my hand and I can now play in near darkness. "Looking" with the mouse is a no-brainer.

There is a dichotomy between the keyboard/mouse and the hand-held controller memes and the real difference between the two can only be measured using a scoreboard. To each his own as they say.

M i c h a e l (OFI)

To each his own is correct - I rarely have to look down at the keyboard in the middle of a firefight. With Doom 3 specifically, the only time I remember having to glance down was for specialty items like the flashlight, etc.

I actually attempted to play Gears of War at a friend's on his Xbox360 recently, and it was quite the struggle - maybe there's a way to increase the sensitivity for the thumbsticks, but all I know is that enemies were hitting me 5-6 times before I even got the crosshairs in place. Once I played for a while I got used to movement and handling the weapons, but freelook continued to be a nightmare - if it wasn't for an auto-targeting feature, I'd have been a even darker piece of toast than I already was...

Actually, the one console I do own, the Wii, is a much easier transition from a PC IMO - the ability to move a cursor/target around with a simple flick of the Wiimote is very reminiscent of a mouse, only a little more work because I can't rest my forearm on a computer desk...

So here's what my first question should have been - they have a keyboard and mouse for the 360?

All my weapons now have the flashlight attachment, permanent! There is no way I can play a game wherein you choose between flashlight or a gun, THAT is ridiculous.

As for a keyboard on the x360, I use an old iMac keyboard for text messaging.

M i c h a e l (OFI)

I believe I was playing before the duct tape mod..

I think I meant to ask how one hooks a keyboard up to the 360- is there a natural port or does one have to buy an adapter?
