It used to be a safe bet that the best time to get a Mac was after one of the MacWorld conferences, either in January (in San Francisco) or July (in Boston first, now in New York, soon to be in Boston again). That's because Apple regularly introduced new machines at those conferences, and you waited to get the latest and best, or to get the discounted older and not quite best any more. Now, it's hard to tell cause Apple is deliberately not introducing new hardware at the MW conferences. Some people say that's because the demand for new machines every six months was hard to meet, and some say that it's because Apple wants to bring out hardware when it wants, not when the conferences happen to meet, and others say that it's to avoid people waiting till the conferences to make their purchases. Your Mac is identical to my Mac. I'd love to get a new one, but only cause I like new things. The computer is actually pretty much adequate for my uses. I think that has to be the criterion you use: doea it still serve you well? If it does, then it's still ok.

Great wits are sure to madness near allied.--John Dryden, "Absalom and Achitophel"

There's some talk that Apple might be looking to change processors around 2004, maybe to the new IBM PowerPC 970 (I posted a link to a story on that chip in the Lounge). All that may be pure rumor, but still unless you have a burning need for a new computer, 2004 sounds like a good target.

Great wits are sure to madness near allied.--John Dryden, "Absalom and Achitophel"

You have the same machine as I do. It's been wonderful and so reliable. I'm loathe to give it up but I must soon. I have been doing a great deal of "painting" with Painter 7 lately and am finding it too darn sluggish for my needs. If it weren't for this app I would be keeping "Clarence" around a while longer.
Myself, I'm going to wait a bit after MWSF to see what transpires. It's only a few weeks away and unless in dire need, it would be foolish to rush out and get something right now.

Smart money would wait til around late January, early February... but then, it's only a few extra months to the summer MacWorld... it's a big game that never ends. If you want a new Mac now, you should get it now. Waiting til after MWSF in January *might* get you a small speed bump, probably won't be any price discount on the new ones, and the old ones will probably be a bit cheaper, but not much.

Visit Me At My .Mac Site
