A freind of mine is thinking of getting an iPod and he... well, here's the text from his email:

In reply to:

I'm thinking of going with the 30 gig video ipod, which is $250,
instead of the $200 4 gig nano.

What about a dock? There are tons. Should I go with apple? Does it
matter? If it says thay are ipod photo compatible, does that mean
they work with the video ipod? Some of them say they will display
slideshows on the tv through an av cable. Does that mean they will
also display track name/other info on the tv also. I'd like to get on
that would, and also has a remote. You know anything about this?

Anyone know the answers to any of his questions? My iPod was a fourth gen black and white, so I don't know nuthin' about them new-fangled Video iPods and such.

And while I'm at it, anyone here got a CD ROM drive from a tray loading iMac they're willing to get rid of on the cheap (as in shipping cost or something)?

Edited by trey on 12/20/06 03:50 PM (server time).

I was going to answer earlier, Trey, but from sheer ignorance. I just bought a Universal dock from Apple for my son's photo iPod. I haven't opened the box because it's a Christmas present, but I can tell you that the box says nothing at all about video iPods, and I bet that if the dock could do video, the box would say so.

____________________________________________________
Bliss was it in that dawn to be alive,
But to be young was very heaven!

First off:
The very kewl wafer-thin 2G NANO may be trey-cool!
but if your friend is concerned about slide shows on TV
then I'd think that he'd be needing move that 2Gigs! So
chosing the 30G chubby for $50 more was a wise choice.

yeap!
I purchased the Universal Dock when I bought my 60G Video
because it did everything that your friend wants to do.

BUT
be fore-warned that you'd also need to buy all the
cables and connectors to do what he wants to do.
The Universal Dock also has the sensor necessary to
give you the remote control capabilities, but the remote
itself is an additional $40.

Apple's dirty little secret is that they'll "nickel & dime"
you straight to the poor house, given half the chance.

It started out last Christmas when my BF tossed me a
crisp $1,000 bill telling me to buy whatever I wanted.

[color:white]. . . . . . . . . . KA- CHING!

People tend to overlook the little things, like the all
important The Apple Care Package that nails you for an
additional $100 .... but the rest of it is just a blurr!

The iPod comes with a single cable... if you use that at
your desk, you'll need another $30 connector cable
for the Universal Dock to stay near your Entertainment
Center (unless you plan to connect & disconnect all the
power adapter and AV Cables (all sold separately) every
time you want to hook the thing up... So where were we?

$350 60G iPod
$100 AppleCare
$ 40 Universal Dock
$ 40 Remote Control
$ 20 AC Adapter
$ 20 AV Cables
-----------
$670 and counting

$ 20 Optional 2nd Sync Cable

Din't want it all scratched up so:
$30 Invisible Shield Film
$40 iSkin eVo3
$20 Splitter or sharing Tunes
$20 Carrying case
$90 Kensington Car Stereo hookup
--------
$890
Plus Tax and Shipping and Handling
(since I get most of it online)

Short Answer:

as you see in the above break-down
the individual parts come to almost the
same price as the Deluxe, which includes all
the necessary cables PLUS a MUCH Better Remote!

My Entertainment Center runs through an amplifier and
excellent speakers, so I wouldn't be listening to an iPod thru
TV Speakers (as some of the reviewers seem to have overlooked)

So, if I had to do it all again.... I'd go for the DLO HomeDock Deluxe!

It's gotten Mixed Reviews
that seem to bang evenly between 1 & 5 Stars

It seems that either people LOVE it or HATE it!

with those results, I'd tend to think that they either expected too much,
...or don't know how to hook it up properly.... do the research and get some
3rd party reviews from C-NET, iLounge, & MacWorld Review.

Anyway, thanx for the question
it made me check out what was new
since an audiophile buddy of mine just got his first iPod (& his first APPLE Product)
I'll do some checking... but this sounds like the perfect addition to his Home System as well!
