I've decided to ask for a game machine for Christmas this year, and I can't tell which one really is the best machine. I'm not really that concerned with the pricetag, though I really can't for the life of me figure out why the Xbox costs $400. Is it really 33% better than the Playstation 2? As if $300 is somehow more acceptable. :)

Though I'll answer this question for the most part by going around to different stores and playing on their models, I'd love to hear the thoughts of anyone who owns either or both. I'm primarily interested in the true system speed (latency, do the games skip), the feel of the controllers, richness of the graphics, etc.

yo, Antman....

I can tell you this... If the Xbox is as bad compared to the PS2, as the Nintendo Gamecube is, then you're much better off going with the PS2.

The PS2 has two things going for it. Much better graphics than the two Gamecube games I played all weekend, and a helluva lot more titles available now.

The Xbox looks cool, but like 128K says, it is a MS product, so who knows what'll come of it in the future.

Oh and one other thing. Sony just released the US version of their Linux kit for the PS2, so if you outgrow the game play of the PS2 in the future, I have a feeling you'll be able to turn your PS2 into a cheap little rackmount server.... not a bad price for a low end server, IMO.

TTYL.

John

johnengler

Ah... that makes more sense now. You guys don't act like strangers in your messages, but you also don't clearly indicate you know each other (or I've forgotten....nothing new there).

I'll be glad to take your word for it RE his PHP.

128k_Mac

"The box said 'Requires Windows XP or better' so I bought a Macintosh." - Anonymous
In the end it will be the Xbox- for how much we all hate microcrap they will steal and gather more developers- I predict by 2003 there will be 20 times more games then for playstation- which will either be playstation3 or 4 or go the route of the atari- then try to start over

why is there a IBM deskstar in my machine?
IBM is one of the main providers of OEM hard drives. Apple has never made their own. I've got more parts in my G4 Tower with IBM's name on them than ones with Apple's.

I believe the other primary supplier at present is Maxtor.

If it's a DeskStar you must have an iBook or a Power Book (could be either a Pismo or TiBook). I have a DeskStar in my TiBook.

I like to think of myself as a detective.

If it's in an Xbox or Play Station please clue me in!

128k_Mac

"The box said 'Requires Windows XP or better' so I bought a Macintosh." - Anonymous
