Okay, so I purchased a new 17 inch (Intel of course) iMac about a month ago. It is not without it's problems. The number one problem I am just starting to have is that a few times now it has gone to sleep and refuses to wake up again unless I reboot. I have changed the sleep setting to keep the computer from going to sleep, but this is more of a stopgap.

Anyone heard of this problem? I searched around but found nothing specific. It could mean nothing, but a friend who bought the same computer as mine around the same time has not experienced the same problem. Differences between us I can think of: He has one user, I have 3. I used the Firewire cable update to suck all my software/files off my iBook to my new iMac when I bought it, but my friend started from scratch. Also, I tend to mess with settings and freeware/shareware more than my friend does.

Any ideas?

We are what we repeatedly do. -Aristotle

Forgot to mention a few other things:

This could be a big clue, I don't know: When I was trying to get my computer to wake up, I noticed the caps lock key was not signalling it was on with that green indicator light. However, I don't know if this means the computer is not responding to the keyboard or if this key isn't supposed to respond when the computer is in sleep mode. I could test it, but I am too afraid my computer won't wake up again.

However, having said this, the computer also won't wake up from sleep when I click the mouse either.

Also, I am not using any extra Firewire devices. I don't think I have even hooked up my iPod since I bought this iMac.

We are what we repeatedly do. -Aristotle

I have a 17inch 2.0 ghz iMac that I bought about 3 weeks ago with no issues. I have tons of firewire drives and massive amount of shareware loaded. I have not seen anything on this issue but I will keep an eye out for you. Congrats on the new Mac!!

www.patgamble.com
I'm sure you checked, but just making sure: what about the energy saving panel in system prefs? What are the settings there?

I used to have my hard drive go to sleep and it caused me to lose connections to the internet and something else. Now I just leave it running and only have my monitor sleep.

Me too, John. My G5 tower never goes to sleep, just the monitor. The laptops are a different story cause they go to sleep when you close the top.

____________________________________________________
Bliss was it in that dawn to be alive,
But to be young was very heaven!

I'm not a fan of copying system files from one Mac to another. I also don't like to use the system that comes on the Mac from Apple. It is put there via a disc image. The best thing is a good clean install. Then reinstall all your apps. It's the first thing I do when I get a new Mac. And about once a year I do it again just to get rid of bit rot. Other than that you may in fact have a hardware issue. Do you live near an Apple Store?

Since this problem started, I have changed my Energy settings. As of a few days ago, I have it set so that only the monitor goes to sleep, so as to avoid the problem entirely. I don't remember seeing anything peculiar about the settings when I changed them, and certainly not one that I would think would keep the computer from waking up.

Anyway, I'll keep my computer in no sleep mode until/if I find more information about what is causing it. Do you and Yoyo keep your computer on at all times even though you don't put it to sleep? Just curious.

We are what we repeatedly do. -Aristotle

You know, I don't like doing it either, and I have always started fresh before. But the option came up, and I didn't remember seeing it before, and I was in quite a rush that week, and I did it. This might have been a mistake, but for the first few weeks it was giving me no problems...

Actually, I have also had a first time issue where iTunes absolutely refuses to shut down completely. I force quit several times, and even logged in and out, but to no avail. (I even tried killall in Terminal, but my skills there are limited and I probably got the command wrong) I had to reboot in the end. It has been a while since I have had such problems. I am wondering if it isn't my wife's habit of leaving her Shuffle hooked up to the back of the computer for days on end...

We are what we repeatedly do. -Aristotle

The only times I turn off the G5 is when there are thunderstorms. Otherwise it's running Folding@home 24/7.

____________________________________________________
Bliss was it in that dawn to be alive,
But to be young was very heaven!
