I don't remember it ever asking... but if you leave this unchecked it won't duplicate.

edit:

I just realized that's probably not what you're talking about. You mean two of the same track in your library? There are some Applescripts for removing dupes.
Edited by Trog on 08/12/06 07:37 PM (server time).

Right..two of the same tracks in the library...I somehow thought that it would ask you, as you were importing it, if you wanted to copy over duplicate tracks.

Maybe I'm thinking of iPhoto, which I know does that.

How are you importing it? If I drag a song into my library that is already imported nothing happens (i.e. I don't get a dupe).

I imagine if I moved the file to another directory it would probably import it as a dupe, but I don't know how iTunes (or iPhoto) would know that two files in different locations are the same thing (especially with different time stamps, etc.)? Are you sure iPhoto can do this?

I'm importing it by dragging it into the library window in iTunes.

iPhoto asks you if you want to import a duplicate photo. I'm assuming it just goes based on the file name or exif info or whatever. Here it is...and this is what iTunes needs:

If it's the exact, same track, nothing will happen; i.e.: no duplicate.

[color:blue][/b]Been there. Done that.[/b]

And in order for iTunes to recognize a duplicate, the tracks must be the same name and length, otherwise iTunes thinks it's a different track.

CreativeGuy for daily tips, tricks and commentary on all things graphic design.

Hey Bryan. Good to see you are still among the living. It seems I remember iTunes used to ask about duplicates when I imported as well...strange.

We are what we repeatedly do. -Aristotle
