If you saw the commercials, you saw the movie. It's about a guy that's too dumb to do anything outside his profession, which he lives and breathes. It's Anchorman meets Nascar. Of course he loses his spot on the top and has to become one with his heart to make it to the top again. Add in a cliched gay Frenchman (constructed to be the polar opposite of our hero), horrible editing and awkward moments of jokes falling flat and you've got the Ballad of Ricky Bobby.

The only funny characters were his two foul-mouthed little kids. Michael Clarke Duncan should stick to being a big, retarded black guy with magical powers (ala Green Mile), cos he can barely speak...let alone act. Will Ferrel is still plummeting alongside Jim Carrey down the rabbit hole to Used-to-be-funnyland. I should've gone to see The Descent.

1/2-star out of 4.

Sure, the trailer's an A-. As for the rest... ugh.

They have the villian (the gay Frenchman) sipping cappuccino and reading while racing. He also twists Ricky Bobby's arm, forcing him to admit he loves crepes. It's the stuff that makes you say "come on!" out loud in the theater. I mean, they set up cameras and lights and hired set decorators for this?

When they keep showing the same clips over and over and even they aren't funny, you know. Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy had some funny scenes but, this just looks awful.

***Leoville
i had high hopes for the gay french bad guy since his other work cracks me up:

--
"I am mindful that diversity is one of the strengths of the country" --president bush on 9/27/05
ugh, the bottom character is borat . . . funny, but funny in a good SNL skit sort of way. and most of those character movies have sucked.

wikipedia site for the movie -- at least parts of the movie are impromptu and involve folks who didn't realize they were being included in a movie. that's how his HBO show is set up with all of his characters above. they do a good job of editing, so maybe the movie will be alright. i'll wait to read your review.

--
"I am mindful that diversity is one of the strengths of the country" --president bush on 9/27/05
