Ok guys...I have two partitions, one for X and one for 9.2.1. I have used this setup since the PB days of X. After installing OS 10.1, OS 9 will not recognize my X partition at all. It asks if I want to format disc "unknown" each time after a crash. I can run the OS X installer and stop it after it shows the OS X partition as a choice for installation and that works to get back to X (and 9 will recognize it again). Anyone else experience this one? What a pain!<br><br>AlgæS

Well, you may have to just break down and formatt it. If you do, I would use OS X's "disk utility" or drive setup. Good luck. Oh, and with something like this, I would back up data now, before it's too late!! I agree with bdog that most such problems appear to be related to corruption when upgrading over existing 10.0.x (or PB seems to increase probability if 10.0.x installed over it).<br><br>Unfortunately Apple didn't simply provide full install 10.1, 9.2.1, and Developer's Tools (3 CDs) to all eligible "free upgrade" users of 10.0.x, whether via both the free handout at authorized dealer or the mail order methods. There's no good reason in the world. Anyone who owned a 10.0.0 CD had to already be a legitimate owner of both OS 9 and X. Idiots. Rant ends.<br><br>Lacking such a set, my preference is to boot Mac with the 10.1 update with 10.0.x already installed on one volume (as required by installer) and 9.1/9.2.1 on the other. Select the "clean install" option which will format prior to then doing a clean install of 10.1. Caveat. You are working with volumes which are partitions. I'm working with volumes which are drives. I do not recall if there is an option to format with partitions. See bdog's recommendation if there is no such option.<br><br>After resolving this issue what is the next step? That answer is going to vary based on the media and/or downloaded update/upgrade files from Apple. Did "classic" get lost somewhere along the way in the formatting prior to 10.1 clean install? See previous comments about "Idiots." <br><br>We all have a variety of media and downloads to work with if OS9 needs to be installed/upgraded. Based on apparent corruption problems with 10.0.x -> 10.1 is anyone interested in starting with 9.0 then to 9.04 to 9.1 to 9.21, depending on media/downloads available? (Bit of hyperbole here. I don't recall if 9.04 is required if going from 9.0 to 9.1.) <br><br>The most popular concept which I've gleaned from messages posted primarily by IS tech support people who have done numerous updates/installs and who wish to avoid problems is to start out with a formatted volume for OS X, whether a partition or a drive. Some have purchased a new, retail 10.1 install set of CDs to facilitate the update/install of 10.1. <br><br>It is also not altogether unwise to format the volume with 9.l/9.2.1 which will become classic because the OS on that volume may be "dirty" (corrupt in some small way) due to use. Any small problems can be magnified when 9.x becomes "classic." Your mileage may vary.<br><br>The pain involved in this general approach is obvious. It depends on what media or updaters from downloads a user has. Depends on how much user enjoys backing up data, and means available, on volume(s) then restoring. Beginning with System 7.5 I have always run utility(ies) prior to and/or immediately after each update/clean install. I probably should have started this with 7.1. I consider this essential. <br><br>How much insurance does the user wish to buy with time involved and/or money?<br><br>Good luck.<br><br>
