Just got the ZR500 and before getting it, several canon sales people said I could tranfer old VHS home videos using the ZR500 as a passthrough to the Mini in OS 10.4.3...well I called canon and they now say it does not pass ftrough...was is the truth???

Can it be done if so how?

If not, what is the less expensive VHS to DV converter and the best for this?

Thanks

What Carp said is true and also, you can get EyeTV to watch TV on your computer. It will also let you hook up your VHS player and transfer tape to computer hard drive, then burn to disk.

Convert analog VHS tapes into digital files
Capture video from a VCR, DVD player or camcorder and create digital copies of your VHS tapes to edit and save. Thanks for the reply...

I have lots of VHS tapes of old home movies...

Now this is what I did:

I hooked up the VHS recorder and hooked the the red, yellow and white plug in to the VHS I pluged the other end into the ZR500...I also pluged in the fire wire into the mini and the ZR500...I launched the iDVD...it showed that the camera was there...I could see the live feed on the camera...but could nor get the VHS to play through to the program...I presed import and nothing happen...

So now what ???...Canon siad it will not pass through...are they right?

Does the ZR500 camcorders provide a analog-to-digital "passthrough" capability...that is what I was trying to say at first?

Can you record the VHS to the camera ? you should be able to. Then you have to down load from the camera to the Mini -- yes its double the work.

If you have that many tapes you should look at what Kate mentioned that eye TV thing or some other hardware solution

I think your only choice is to record the old VHS to the Canon and then import to iDVD. No pass through listed for the ZR500 that I could find. I got my son the Canon Elura 80 which does pass through analog to digital. Not to be an ass, but that was one of the main criteria that I looked for before I bought the Elura 80. Caveat Emptor. Take it back if you can.

Not sure...found Recording from digital video devices(DV dubbing) in the books on the camcorder...will try it soon...

Is the EyeTV Ez the least expensive and the best one to buy to do this VCR to the Mini?...

Has anyone out there used it? I read the web page and it sounded good but again the last time I called the Canon people I got several answers....is there another hardware solution as good or should I just go with it?

Can not send it back... It is a good camera I will keep it and get a device to do what I need and shoot all future things on DV and once all is tranfer I will never need it the Eyetv EZ...

Any other ideas?
