I just installed the new update, and when i rebooted i waited for half an hour and it got stuck on the flower icon. So I had to shut off the power and reboot again. This time it took ten minutes but I finally got it to work. Has this happened to everyone else. And why does this do this sometimes? I am always paranoid about installing OS updates because once a few years ago I did one and it killed my hard drive.

Sometimes it's a good idea to repair permissions before and after an OS update or a major software upgrade. Not a magic bullet by any stretch, but it can sometimes help avoid problems.

Try booting from your install CD and maybe run the updater again. Or run DW to see if there are other problems.

BTW, what kind of hardware are we talkin' about here?

Do you know how to run fsck? If not:

Start up (or restart) holding down the "apple" and "s" keys. You'll get a black screen and white type will begin to scroll.

When the scrolling stops, type fsck -f and hit "return". More info will start scrolling. If, when it stops again, it says "the volume [name of your hard drive] appears to be ok", or "The volume was successfuly repaired", type reboot, and hit "return" again. You'll boot back into your normal screen.

If, on the other hand, it says "The volume could not be repaired", re-type fsck -f, and you should see one of the ok messages. Type reboot, return, and go back to work.

If your problem persists, back everything up and do a clean install.
